Manifesta 8 Opening Rescheduled

Manifesta, The European Biennial of Contemporary Art, rescheduled its opening for October 9th due to a general strike in Spain. Manifesta is a nomadic art event that changes its location every two years and this year, the 8th edition of the biennial will take place in Spain. Respecting the strike and pushing back the opening event should allow visitors to make it to Spain on time and, thinking of the empty halls that welcomed Art Cologne visitors earlier this year (the volcanic ash got in the way of most flights) makes the decision seem like a very good idea. Hussein Chalayan Retrospective in Istanbul

The design museum İstanbul Modern opened the most comprehensive exhibition in Turkey of works by Hussein Chalayan. The touring exhibition was previously shown at the Design Museum, London and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo. Curated by Donna Loveday, the show brings together fashion collections, installations and films produced by Hussein Chalayan between the years 1994 and 2010. Ever since his graduate show at St. Martin’s college (which was bought in its entirety by Browns) the prolific Cypriote has become a cult figure in the fashion world. Architecture, design, technology, science and philosophy have all played a part in his work, the finest examples of which are on show at the İstanbul Modern. Among the works on view are a dress that can be folded into an airmail letter and posted (Airmail Dress, 1999), a collection of furniture that changes into clothes (Afterwords, 2000, image above) and outfits that mechanically transform from one era to another (One Hundred and Eleven, 2007), which made for one of the most spectacular, talked about catwalk shows in the history of fashion.

Bottega Veneta launches campaign with Robert Longo

Robert Longo’s series “Men in the Cities,” created in the late 1970s and early 1980s, is the basis for the artistic collaboration with Bottega Veneta for the Fall-Winter 2010/2011 campaign. Longo’s iconic series depicts men and women in business attire contorted in extreme positions – a distilled graphic imagery that was so emblematic of the 80’s, in fact, that it features as set design in the movie American Psycho. Recently, the contorted and tilted silhouette has become a favorite imagery in advertising (just add earphones to the twisting body and you’ll know what we mean) but many are oblivious to the fact that it’s Longo’s series of dynamic portraits that’s being quoted. To set things straight, Bottega Veneta Creative Director Tomas Maier sought Longo out for the upcoming campaign. He joins a prestigious list of artists who have contributed to the Bottega Veneta’s advertising portfolio, such as Nan Goldin, Steven Meisel, Larry Sultan, Nick Knight and Annie Leibovitz, to name a few.
