Since November 2009, Laurence von Thomas has been collecting and blogging photography from around the world in the online collection, if you leave. Now, five years later and 500 photographers, over 400,000 followers, and the steadily growing 1500 contributing members, if you leave, has far surpassed the identity of just another tumblr blog, and has firmly cemented itself as an important showcase for contemporary photography.
Published by Arthur-Frank and already on its fourth edition, Volume IV of if you leave gathers images that were exhibited online in 2013. The book itself takes an understated first approach, with its calm and subtle cover removed of photographic imagery. Inside, the feeling of solitude and peacefulness prevails through the book’s 104 pages. Delicate faces, silent landscapes, secret moments, and still objects are just some of the ways in which the 91 international photographers set about capturing something which is an inherent challenge for any photographer.
To keep in with the feeling of quietness, the book features no names to the individual images, but instead at the beginning of the publication a QR-Code where you can see a virtual index of everyone involved, making sure that the viewer’s whole attention is focusing on the beautiful photographs that await in the inside.
