The Photographer Who Immortalised David Bowie by the Pool

Michel Haddi has been a stalwart of the fashion industry for over twenty years, with his photography being featured in magazines such as Vogue, Vanity Fair and GQ. Yet he remains a rare thing — somebody who manages to transform a simple fashion shoot into a genuine work of art. Thus his portraits of celebrities such as Clint Eastwood, Uma Thurman and Martin Scorsese are now considered to be some of the most provocative of the genre. As he says about his work: “I love a cross between natural emotions with a touch of sarcasm, not totally politically correct, I do like to provoke – but with a classic flair.” He has been able to maintain a portfolio including hundreds of different celebrities, mostly within the film world, due to his excellent rapport and easy manner.  Beyond photography, he also manages the London-based publishing house One Eyed Jacks publishing Ltd, which publishes his own fashion/beauty books.

Our selection on offer includes the iconic prints from his 1990 shoot with David Bowie for Interview Magazine. According to the photographer, it was a perfect match. As he states: “His eyes and his focus, he was a very precise man, a real chameleon. I knew exactly where he was going with his look, and he was happy that I knew. He was a very well-educated man.”
