Music beneath threatening skies

For Spring/Summer ‘10, in place of a runway show, a presentation, a short film screening or an installation of mannequins, A.D.Deertz decided, instead, to invite guests to a performance by the band Bodi Bill. Beneath threatening skies, a throng gathered in front of the Kastanienallee flagship, as the group’s melancholy electronic twang echoed down the street. After three days of shows, it offered a welcome change of pace, as the lead singer crooned, spilling out onto the street, dressed head-to-toe in the label’s dapper, understated take on contemporary design.
As thick droplets of rain began to fall, I asked Vibke, the brand’s designer, why she opted for a concert instead of a more typical format. “I think music communicates my idea better than a fashion show…it’s more people friendly. I wanted Bodi Bill to play because they’re my friends, I like their music and I’ve done stage costumes for them.”
Her refreshingly unpretentious approach to exhibiting her collection is echoed in the pieces themselves – subtle and precise, they speak of a quiet confidence, the kind that doesn’t need a lot of bells and whistles in order to make an impression. It’s another, lesser seen side of Berlin Fashion Week, one that doesn’t depend on hype to sustain itself. I think we can all agree that’s a good thing, right?
