Risto Bimbiloski Seals Berlin Fashion Week

He’s the designer all the cool girls know about. You see them walking around town in one of his lightning bolt knee length shift dresses and crocheted sweaters and fight the urge to run behind them calling out pleas of “where did you get that dress?” You should know about Risto Bimbiloski. The inception of his label was way back in 1998, when MTV was still a music video channel and Bimbiloski watched with the vigour and determination of a whimsical teenager with the hope that one day, he’d be a part of the Western fashion action. After four years as head designer for menswear at Louis Vuitton, Bimbiloski is concentrating on his label, Risto. He showed his pre collection at Berlin Fashion Week Saturday night, the last show of this season, the cry of which erupted the waiting tent into applause and giggles. Digital print bike shorts underneath black crocheted mini dresses with flounce skirts, blazer dresses and shredded white denim knitted into oversized and chunky vests with gold chain detailing along the edges; long sleeve body suits with very, very high cut legs and of course, his signature print leggings. Check out all the cool girls wearing him next season.

Army of Mohr

Everybody was guessing about what would the infamous fashion shocker Patrick Mohr do this season. After his homeless persons and over-tanned body builders of former shows, wild assumptions about this season’s politically incorrect aesthetics were thrown into the room at pre- and post-show conversations. But no one could have anticipated what we saw on the catwalk today – a real collection. Yes, we mean clothes. And not just any clothes, but wearable ones at that! Except for a couple of sporty menswear pieces in tomato red, the well-rounded collection was even conceptually interesting and elaborately crafted. That is not to say that Mohr let his models get away with just being models, oh no. Instead, they wore plastic bald cone heads, facial hair and heavy white powder. Gender was completely erased and all were uniformally styled to resemble…Mohr himself. The army of sexless Mohr clones was accepted with great pleasure by the audience. So it almost seemed as if Mohr knowingly refused to please when he had two “shock” models conclude the show – an extremely emaciated and unhealthy looking female model with a bad boob-job, and Shaun Ross, the albino model seen all over the place these days. The fact that Mohr sent these two models down the catwalk as his token shockers was – what else – in very bad taste.

Kaviar Gauche Goes Hard Candy

Kaviar Gauche loves to play with contrasts, hard and soft being the most predominant one in all collections. This season, however, the ‘hard’ seemed to be missing, and the slim black leather belts or heavy silver jewelry worn in combination with the sugar-sweet garments in pastel colors just wasn’t enough to mellow down the saccharine overkill. Even the music by Rammstein blaring in the background couldn’t be hard enough to counteract the candy colored collection.

On the Eve of Grace… Grazia Opening Night

The opening show of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin was based on a great idea: the attempt to create a unified spirit among all designers to show within the following days, at the tent or offsite. All designers contributed one look from their collections which led to a pretty entertaining affair; and even if not all that we saw on the runway was worth waiting those extra 90 minutes for the show to start (owed to the fierce determination to make this an A class social event by shooing Z class German celebrities over the red carpet which actually was yellow, Grazia magazine’s signature color) the gesture itself was quite touching. Unfortunately we are not able to present any images here – you’ll have to wait for the next issue of Grazia. As a placer, we are herewith presenting you a detail of the most astounding set decoration surrounding a model of the new Mercedes-Benz E-class convertible inside the tent.

Yeah, they did it again!

It is no secret that we love the official Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin bags, and this season is no exception. Now in their fourth season, winning team BREE and Ayzit Bostan this time come up with a weightless duffle bag which is highly practical: no weight on your shoulder, and both hands free to grab all those champagne glasses and flying dinner treats.

The true sleeper hit of the season – Michael Sontag

There were some entertaining shows during this season’s Berlin Fashion Week. A few parties were worth a trek through the snow. And (as my sleek colleagues can vouch as witnesses) I gratefully enjoyed more than my fair share of champagne and free food at one afterparty. There was even a smattering of substantive looks and desirable garments at Bebelplatz and off-site. But only one show stood out as a solid and admirable collection: Michael Sontag was the true sleeper hit of the season. [more]

“Ganzkörpereinsatz” at ic! berlin

ic! berlin designer Ralph Anderls lying naked, fettered and gauged on runway.

One of the things I love a bout the German language so much is that you can nominalize just about anything. Where other languages would require a full sentence, in German you can express a concept with one (very long) word. There is no direct English translation for “Ganzkörpereinsatz”, but paraphrased it would be something like [more]

“Style” and “Nite” people at the Michalsky Style Nite

We are not quite sure what the styles sported by about 90% of the guests of last night’s “Michalsky Style Nite” had to do with either “Style” or “Nite” (however, we did spot some traces of “Michalsky”), but as there were some exceptional appearances after all, and as our readers seem to enjoy clicking their way through people photos, and as sleek daily’s wonderful photographer Maxime Ballesteros can turn “style” into style, here you go: [more]

A matter of perspective

While we already expressed our astonishment at the JOOP! show, we have to admit that from a backstage perspective the whole thing didn’t look too bad. Maybe we should have just stayed back there. Photo gallery: [more]

Know where you are

Last night, Converse transformed an old derelict building into a creative playground, filling it with art and other manifestations of creativity, like people, music and drinks, to kick off its “You’re Here” event series which has been conceived to provoke “moments where vision meets action”. While in the beginning people seemed a bit hesitant to follow the invitation to paint on the walls, after a while they were most willing to forget about good manners and got the action thing going quite well.
