This week’s guest, author Tupoka Ogette, was born in Leipzig into an academic household; her dad came to the GDR from Tanzania as a guest student and met her mum, who was studying mathematics at the time. Around the same time that Tupoka’s mother’s studies were finished, her father had to leave the GDR for the West in order to complete his doctorate. Her mum applied for an exit visa for both her and Tupoka, and they soon – virtually overnight – left Leipzig for the west, when she was just 10 years old.
Tupoka returned to Leipzig for her African studies, where her beloved grandparents still live today. “Home is the place where I don’t have to explain myself,” she once said in an interview. She is one of the best-known facilitators on racism criticism; she advises companies and businesses, gives workshops and wrote the Spiegel bestseller “Exit Racism!”
Her latest book “A Racism-critical Alphabet” is a reference book and workbook especially for young people. A conversation about the annoying question: “Where are you from?”, which she dedicated a whole chapter in her book “And now you” about Tanzania for the first time.
