Happy 50th Birthday, Timberland!

When Nathan Swartz founded Timberland in 1973 in Boston, little did he know that he would revolutionize the footwear industry forever. The brand’s name derives from the literal timber lands of New England, which inspired the brand’s beginnings in workwear. Taking the Timberland Boot from the woods to the streets, the style was soon adopted by 90s Hip-Hop culture and quickly took over the fashion metropoles from New York to London to Milan. With just the same (if not more) cultural impact almost half a century later, the iconic Timberland Premium 6-Inch Boot celebrates its 50th anniversary this year with the launch of the Future73 program.

To kick off the celebration, Timberland invites six future makers to reimagine the Timberland Boot in a ready-to-wear capsule collection: CLOT Edison Chen, Samuel Ross, designer and founder of A-COLD-WALL*, knit researcher Suzanne Oude Hengel, artist Nina Chanel Abney, designer Humberto Leon and founder of RAEBURN Christopher Raeburn.

Timberland’s aim with this initiative is to unite the boot’s rich history with what these six artists believe the future holds. New knit technologies, exaggerated features and artwork incorporated in the boot show the unique approaches each future maker has. Their creations will be released in a series of seven drops spread throughout the whole year. With each drop, a new workshop-style event will take place where the future maker shares a piece of their mind and vision with the next generation.
