See Young Thug Reimagined as Painting Masterpieces

Last week Young Thug dropped his highly anticipated mixtape/album “No, My Name Is Jeffery”. And despite the musical selection being widely acclaimed what the internet has been crazy for is the album’s cover artwork, which features the Atlanta rapper dressed in an elaborate flared ensemble in hues of blue with a parasol hat to boot. Conceived by Garfield Larmond, the image is such a sensation that it’s became a meme – reimagined as an 18th century masterpiece painted by Joseph Wright of Derby. The internet being the internet wasted no time and now there’s even an Instagram account dedicated to images of Young Thug as classic paintings and it already counts 13k followers.
@YoungThugAsPaintings is the brain child of Art History major Hajar Benjida, who created it as a school project that compares heavily tattooed trap rapper Young Thug to the greatest paintings from the past. It draws similarities between photos of the rapper’s body language and possessions to those in masterpieces by Botticelli, Caravaggio and Frida Kahlo. Some highlights of the account include a collage where where Young Thug looks down adoringly at his iPhone in his white zip up Armani Exchange, which mirrors Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller’s “The Love Letter” where a nude lady looks adoringly at a love letter, or Young Thug posing as “The Birth of Venus”.
The designer behind the Japanese inspired ensemble worn by “Jeffery” for the album cover is Alessandro Trincone, an Italian designer, part of VFiles bi-annual crowdsourced designer showcase. The final image is a powerful statement of self confidence and modern day gender-fluidity.
