Yesterday evening, Tate Britain announced Helen Marten as the winner of its 2016 Turner Prize. This is her second winning in the span of a month, with the London-based artist taking home the Hepworth Prize for Sculpture only a few weeks ago.
Established in 1984, the Turner Prize has grown to become one of the most prestigious awards for British art. Previous winners include Damien Hirst, Rachel Whiteread and Wolfgang Tillmans. This year’s other nominees included Michael Dean, Anthea Hamilton and Josephine Pryde. However, in the end the judges selected Marten for her masterful execution of material and form, seen in such works as the 2015 Venice Biennale’s “Lunar Nibs” and her New York solo exhibition entitled “Eucalyptus Let Us In”.
