Since mid-March, museums and galleries have been eerily silent. These temples of cultural refuge that were once buzzing with families, tourists and art aficionados alike became empty. Quarantine measures prohibited the opening of galleries and museums in an attempt to curtail large public gatherings. Suddenly, the places that many of us would go to fill a rainy afternoon or revel in a morning of art-induced escapism became out of reach. Foundations and galleries tried to bridge the gap with online exhibitions and VR experiences but the in-person visit was still avidly yearned for by many. As society gradually reopens, one-way systems, face masks and hand sanitiser will become hallmarks of the new normal. After months of deprival, the art and culture trip is once again a viable pastime.
