For SLEEK 61, Spanish photographer and filmmaker Camila Falquez captured the fierce flamenco dancers of Seville in the south of Spain. Teaming up with SLEEK’s fashion editor, Lorena Maza, they documented well-known performers including Ana Morales, Ursula Lopez and Isabel Bayon, and bailaoras from the famous flamenco dance school, Cristina Heeren Foundation, in the Andalusian city. Falquez’s story juxtaposes the dramatic dancers with images of ornate church interiors and sorrowful iconography of the Virgin Mary, comparing the pain and emotion of the Madonna with the passion and feeling of the dancers. Falquez, who has photographed for Teen Vogue, Vogue Spain and Nike, wanted to emphasise the close relationship between the flamenco and the Virgin.
