Don’t get us wrong, we love a glamour moment. We’re here for all of Elizabeth Taylor’s carat-chalked tiaras and Cher’s Bob Mackie nude illusion gowns—they’re great inspiration for doing our weekly shopping. But when everyone looks their best, the sea of elegant gowns and well-tailored suits can get a bit monotonous. That’s why there’s a special place in our hearts for those who serve a side of commentary with their looks—even if it comes at the expense of the “best dressed” list.
Flipping off Trump’s Anti- LGTBQ+ Agenda
Orange is the New Black Guest Actress nominee, Laverne Cox, stunned in a dramatic ruffled dress by London couturier Monsoori, but everyone was looking at her hands, which were holding an enamel rainbow clutch reading, “Oct 8 / TITLE VII / SUPREME COURT.” The bag references an upcoming US federal court case, which will decide whether or not it is legal to fire workers because they are LGBTQ+. She definitely got the message out.
Sticking it to body hair shame
Indya Moore, who plays Angel on Pose, graced the red carpet in the zip-up corset Louis Vuitton dress of our dreams. The gown’s slits rand up past the actress’ legs, fully exposing her pelvic bone. Instead of looking like a women’s razor commercial, Moore chose to go with natural, proving that hair removal does not make or break great stems.
Daring people to call it “too costumy”
We’re all in medieval withdrawal after Game of Thrones’ almost decade-long run and therefore can’t blame Gwendoline Christie, or Brienne of Tarth as we’ve come to know her, for slipping into a literal period costume for the Emmys. She skipped Party City and went straight to Alessandro Michele for a Gucci Jesus look that had us signing up to become disciples.
Breaking crystal ceilings
Ever since producer Ryan Murphy served us Billie Porter on Pose and American Horror story, we have been blessed with his red carpert appearances. Not only did he become the first openly gay actor to win the award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, he gave us the a disco cowboy- businessman fantasy in a Michael Kors suit, embellished with more than 100,000 crystals and paired with an asymmetrical hat by Stephen Jones millinery.
Being free as a bird
The Queer Eye team isn’t the fashion style team we wanted, but they are the ones we need. The crew doesn’t always get it right (we’re looking at Jonathan Van Ness’s knit cape and shorts combo at the VMA’s), but they refuse to be shrinking violets. We’re not sure how we feel about Karamo Brown’s front and back cape from Kaftan Studio, but we feel it is important to be exposed to it so that we can evaluate the pros and cons. Also, we love Tan France’s kurta.
