DRYKORN’s latest 2DY4 collection encourages us to slay any socially-imposed expectations on our digital personae

In an era where data is collected on you from the moment you’re born and becoming a ‘personal brand’ or ‘public figure’ is only an app download away, it can be tougher than ever to detach yourself from the need to maintain visibility in the Digi-sphere. A natural response to this predicament is to seek some form of solace or at the very least anonymity to gain a momentary sensation of escapism. DRYKORN’s 2DY4 campaign sees our protagonist slay his digital persona by burning his phone and retreating into the refuge offered by the natural world.

Draped in the label’s camouflage-print pieces from the 2DY4 collection, he achieves a look that’s befitting of his moment in social camouflage. In 2020, taking time away from screens is perceived as a detox as high screentime has become the default expectation—but if DRYKORN’s 2DY4 collection is anything to go by, there is a way out. Admittedly, a screenless future feels inconceivable at this stage, and our online behaviour and personas will continue to be monitored forevermore, making anonymity a precious scarcity, but the collection appears to capture the essence of Banksy’s snowclone of the infamous Andy Warhol aphorism: “in the future, everyone will be anonymous for 15 minutes”.
