Certain Pace is a silver jewellery brand based in Berlin. The brand is the creative vision of Leon Pl\u00f6tzer and his rings have been seen steadily on the hands around Berlin in just a span of a year.\u00a0 <\/span>What started as an experimental project for himself, has now become his main passion, collaborating with his customers to create one-off, personalised jewellery with a touch of Victorian era aristocracy and Harley Davidson bike gang.<\/p>\n

SLEEK met with Leon at his studio to talk about his beginnings, inspirations and rebranding of his casting problems to Certain Pace.<\/p>\n

SLEEK: How did you get started in jewellery making?<\/p>\n

Leon Pl\u00f6tzer: I started helping out a friend who does grills with admin stuff like managing clients or finances. Because of that, I was always in his studio and he had all of the tools so I started doing my own stuff, more like a project for myself. I was just trying stuff out as some form of creative release because it was during the pandemic and there was nothing really to do.<\/p>\n

S: When exactly was it?<\/p>\n

LP: It was the beginning of 2020. Just before I moved to Berlin from D\u00fcsseldorf.<\/p>\n

S: And you continued the project in Berlin?<\/p>\n

LP: Not really. When I [first] came to Berlin, I didn’t have anything, tool-wise. I was more preoccupied looking for a job, and then working five days a week. Slowly, I found some time to get back into it again; buying some tools and working from my friend\u2019s garage, just trying stuff out like before. Gradually, I started building a vision and decided this could really be my thing. S: What happened next?<\/p>\n

LP: I created an Instagram page to document my stuff for fun. At first, I was just my friends but then people started catching on when I saw it sort of growing, it legitimised what I\u2019m doing.<\/p>\n

S: Were you always interested in jewellery? Or the lightbulb moment back at your friend\u2019s studio in D\u00fcsseldorf?<\/p>\n

LP: I\u2019ve always loved rings but always short of choice of nice rings to wear. I couldn’t really afford to buy the really nice stuff and couldn’t find any well-priced good stuff. I used to forage jewellery at flea markets, trying to pay as little money for it as possible \u2013 but that\u2019s not always easy either. S: What does it mean to be a creative in Berlin. Has this city opened up more doors for you?<\/p>\n

LP: Not that it\u2019s had a life-changing impact on me but I think it gave me the space to even consider pursuing something creative as a career. I don\u2019t think I would\u2019ve taken that extra step if I was in D\u00fcsseldorf.<\/p>\n

S: In late August, you\u2019re launching the first official collection for Certain Pace. Looking back at your designs to date, you\u2019ve been influenced heavily by Victoria era jewellery. Is this something you\u2019re still influenced by?<\/p>\n

LP: I\u2019ve always loved Victoria era jewellery. It\u2019s so versatile \u2013 you see various techniques and seeing the different materials used.<\/p>\n

S: What else inspires you?<\/p>\n

LP: Architecture, mainly. S: What do you enjoy most about working with silver?<\/p>\n

LP: I like the way it looks and how malleable the material is, which is great when you want to experiment with it.<\/p>\n

S: What is the collaboration process like when you\u2019re working on a custom design with a customer?<\/p>\n

LP: I ask them to describe to me what they\u2019re passionate about or talk to me about something that they really like or enjoy. This helps me gather information and find a theme to create jewellery for them.<\/p>\n

S: Your project was originally called @castingproblems but now @certainpace. What\u2019s the story behind the names?<\/p>\n

LP: Casting Problems was what I came up with when I first started because I was always dependent on my friend since he had the keys to the studio and he had the knowledge of how to work the tools. So, whenever I wouldn\u2019t meet the deadline for myself or for a friend I\u2019ve promised, I\u2019d say \u201cI\u2019m having casting problems.\u201d But as the project has become more serious, having \u201cproblems\u201d isn\u2019t something I want to identify with so that\u2019s how the brand became Certain Pace.<\/p>\n

S: You want to associate with something more positive.<\/p>\n

LP: [laughs] Yeah, and more abstract too. Certain Pace feels neutral.<\/p>\n
