Yesterday, I entered four lobbies within an hour \u2013 none of them for me. Louis let me stay in his apartment while he was away.\u00a0 \u00a0It is in the North of Paris.\u00a0 \u00a0Away from<\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 I went out last night.\u00a0 \u00a0I think everybody did.\u00a0 \u00a0The streets were not necessarily filled, but there was also not much room on the concrete to walk.\u00a0 \u00a0The city feels tight and imposing when you are alone at night.\u00a0 \u00a0It was boiling.\u00a0 \u00a0Or, at least I thought it was boiling.\u00a0 \u00a0There was never much wiggle room with how to dress regarding pants or shorts.\u00a0 \u00a0Maybe it was the Australian heritage that made one assume that shorts could be worn absolutely everywhere; the only exception to wearing near-complete casualwear was the need to remove Birkenstocks or thongs and opt for a closed shoe \u2013 usually white \u2013 which I abhor.\u00a0 \u00a0It is not like anybody tells you that you can\u2019t do it.\u00a0 \u00a0But people scream with their eyes, and sometimes thick skin can wear thin.\u00a0 \u00a0Paris can be both a reason for and a place where one can be worn thin. \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 I thought about this as I looked out onto the courtyard in my little striped boxers.\u00a0 \u00a0I couldn\u2019t stand wearing the same pants I wore yesterday.\u00a0 \u00a0Looking out into the little razorblade windows trying to find the room where George Dyer died.\u00a0 \u00a0It turns out that it was at Ho\u0302tel des Saints Pe\u0300res.\u00a0 \u00a0Then again, I doubt it made a difference where it actually happened.\u00a0 \u00a0I still thought about it, even if I was in the wrong room.\u00a0 \u00a0In the wrong place.<\/p>\n

Sometimes I do.\u00a0 \u00a0The hands hold your hair back as you look out across the hotel room floor at the suitcase, which has been stripped away and separated into a disintegrated mess of tops and pants and socks and shirts.\u00a0 \u00a0It is splayed, thick, thoroughly thoughtless, and utterly disorganised like lobsters and scampi in hotel bins.\u00a0 \u00a0The stresses can be justified like layers in winter.\u00a0 \u00a0It can also be stupid, like wincing at doubled-up looks when alone for entire days.\u00a0 \u00a0No one knows that it’s the same pants and top combo.\u00a0 \u00a0Relax.\u00a0 \u00a0Shorts can be the most valuable item in one’s suitcase \u2013 excluding the obvious sock and underpants rule.\u00a0 \u00a0For that reason, even in Paris, it is necessary to at least have one pair \u2013 for whatever gender you may be.\u00a0 \u00a0Of course, Paris is for pants, even in summer.\u00a0 \u00a0But that doesn’t mean you cannot wear a pair of boxer shorts and style them with a baggy shirt when the pants get a bit \u2018too much\u2019 in the dry heat.<\/p>\n

The cargo shorts returned temporarily when the Gorp-Cor ladies and gentlemen tired of their expensive parachute pants and chose to let the legs breathe in the breeze of the street \u2013 or mountains (on occasion).\u00a0 \u00a0Big baggy pants are still \u2018in\u2019 and do promote a wider variety of body shapes, which is odd since that makes pants more useful than shorts in some ways.\u00a0 \u00a0But they are still pants and not shorts.\u00a0 \u00a0However, for those who like the idea of \u2018letting the boys breathe\u2019, wearing shorts in a city like Paris can lead to hesitant pauses when you leave your Airbnb.\u00a0 \u00a0Realistically, one can look fashionable in whatever they\u2019d like, but to feel comfortable is a different world of questions.\u00a0 \u00a0Simple cotton or blend does just fine, and if it is baggy, then you know you\u2019ll be comfortable \u2013 but I would warn against only wearing the shorts (unless you are very, very comfortable).\u00a0 \u00a0I left with my pants in my bag and my boxer shorts visible to the doorman and all the rest of the city.\u00a0 \u00a0I strode out without hesitation or care, just like you could.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
