From punk dive bars to bridges looking over glowing skies at sunset, who’s better to recommend places to capture rare beauty than a photographer? Using her keen eye, Marina M\u00f3naco<\/a>, a photographer from Buenos Aires, looks at Berlin through a rose-colored lens, with much appreciation for the city and the way in which it has shaped her artistic practice; with foundations in editorial and fashion shoots, M\u00f3naco now captures youth culture across Europe, in no small part inspired by the scene she discovered once moving to Berlin to do so. Representing the city\u00a0for the Converse<\/a> One Star Pro \u00a0City Pack, the artist reflects the ethos of the cult-classic brand’s community. SLEEK: What inspired you to become a Converse All Star?<\/p>\n

MARINA MONACO: Something that inspired me was the feeling of wanting to be connected with other artists of the world. It made me curious how a big brand wanted to support young artists to make their own thing. That\u2019s something you don\u2019t see often!<\/p>\n

S: Do you have a story regarding your personal relationship with Converse sneakers?<\/p>\n

MM: I never owned Converse sneakers until I moved here, even though I always wanted ones! Personally, I always thought of the classic Converse Chuck Taylor as a timeless nostalgic-piece that every young person has in their wardrobe. They are my favourite.<\/p>\n

S: In your practice, you capture youth culture, how does this intertwine with the identity of Converse?<\/p>\n

MM: So I think Converse is a big part of the youth culture\u2019s wardrobe. Always happy to see my subjects wearing Converse! So even before I started to be part of the community, Converse was already there in my pictures by accident.<\/p>\n

Kotti<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

I am<\/span> a<\/span> person<\/span> who<\/span> likes<\/span> to<\/span> romanticize<\/span> life<\/span> a<\/span> lot<\/span> and<\/span> whenever<\/span> I<\/span> feel<\/span> I<\/span> need\u00a0<\/span>stimulation<\/span> I<\/span> always<\/span> go<\/span> to<\/span> Kotti<\/span> (this<\/span> is<\/span> how<\/span> people<\/span> call<\/span> the<\/span> area).<\/span> I<\/span> can<\/span> breathe<\/span> a<\/span> lot<\/span> of<\/span> history\u00a0<\/span>there<\/span> –<\/span> it<\/span> is<\/span> just<\/span> inevitable.\u00a0<\/span>Nick<\/span> Cave<\/span> used<\/span> to<\/span> live<\/span> right<\/span> around<\/span> the<\/span> corner.<\/span> Then<\/span> you<\/span> have<\/span> SO36<\/span> –<\/span> a<\/span> venue<\/span> where<\/span> Iggy\u00a0<\/span>Pop<\/span> and<\/span> David<\/span> Bowie<\/span> used<\/span> to<\/span> hang<\/span> out.<\/span> Plenty<\/span> of<\/span> bars,<\/span> places<\/span> to<\/span> eat<\/span> from<\/span> all<\/span> over<\/span> the<\/span> world, crazy people (always) around and the nostalgic train station. I always bring my analog\u00a0camera with me ready to shoot an unexpected situation or a new spot stuck in time.\u00a0My favourite coffee spot is Caf\u00e9 Luzia. I always like to brainstorm for my next shoot and\u00a0drink a flat white (especially in winter under the light of the candles). C\/O<\/span> Berlin:<\/span> photography<\/span> exhibition<\/span> space<\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

It<\/span> is<\/span> one<\/span> of<\/span> my<\/span> favourite<\/span> places<\/span> in<\/span> the<\/span> world.<\/span> C\/O<\/span> has<\/span> the<\/span> BEST<\/span> selection<\/span> of\u00a0<\/span>photography<\/span> in<\/span> Berlin<\/span> (in<\/span> my<\/span> opinion!).\u00a0<\/span>I\u00a0<\/span>cannot<\/span> go<\/span> there<\/span> without<\/span> crying<\/span> (in<\/span> a<\/span> good<\/span> way<\/span> :)))<\/span> and<\/span> getting<\/span> goosebumps.<\/span> In<\/span> short,<\/span> it\u00a0<\/span>made<\/span> me<\/span> realise<\/span> my<\/span> love<\/span> for<\/span> photography.<\/span> My<\/span> interest<\/span> in<\/span> documenting<\/span> youth<\/span> culture<\/span> comes\u00a0<\/span>from<\/span> consuming<\/span> this<\/span> kind<\/span> of<\/span> photography<\/span> I<\/span> found<\/span> in<\/span> the\u00a0<\/span>exhibitions.<\/span> They<\/span> have<\/span> shaped<\/span> a<\/span> lot\u00a0<\/span>of<\/span> the<\/span> way<\/span> I<\/span> see<\/span> my<\/span> work<\/span> and<\/span> the<\/span> work<\/span> of<\/span> others.<\/span> I<\/span> love<\/span> spending<\/span> long<\/span> hours<\/span> in<\/span> the<\/span> bookshop,\u00a0<\/span>taking<\/span> notes<\/span> on<\/span> the<\/span> photographers<\/span> I<\/span> like<\/span> and<\/span> buying<\/span> posters<\/span> for<\/span> my<\/span> room.<\/span> I<\/span> also<\/span> wonder<\/span> if\u00a0<\/span>one<\/span> day<\/span> I<\/span> will<\/span> see<\/span> my<\/span> pictures<\/span> there.\u00a0<\/span>My<\/span> dream<\/span> is<\/span> to<\/span> have<\/span> an<\/span> exhibition<\/span> one<\/span> day.<\/span><\/p>\n

C\/O Berlin will host the work of Mary Ellen Mark whose photographs document our society with an emphasis on capturing marginalized communities. Focusing on the topic of how humans affect nature and subsequently climate change, the exhibition titled “Image Ecology” at C\/O Berlin showcases photographs from numerous artists that radically display the consequences of our actions.
