Usually, Soho House Berlin<\/a> is one of the most popular, yet exclusive hotels, restaurants, gyms and bars in the city. A location where time stands still and the atmosphere allows its guests to enjoy themselves. On this night, SLEEK used this special vibe to host an event, that was a little bit different. The panel talk \u2018Show Must Go On\u2019 with Avia Shoshani, also known as AY\u0308A<\/a>\u00a0brought creative minds together and let us dive into the world of sounds and cultural identity.<\/p>\n

The self-taught singer-songwriter, producer and artist is known for her contemporary pop and R&B melodies, which she combines with a unique twist, letting her Moroccan and Yemeni roots flow into her sound. Her performances are more than just music \u2013 they are one-of-a-kind experiences, taking the audience along for a magical journey. Growing up in an environment of political and personal crisis, AY\u0308A had no alternative but to put her struggles into her musical storytelling. SLEEK: A\u0178A, your music is known for combining Moroccan and Yemeni roots with contemporary pop and R&B melodies. How do you navigate between these diverse influences, and what impact do your cultural roots have on your creative process?<\/p>\n

A\u0178A: I don’t feel like I am navigating anymore but I had to in the past as I lived in two separate realities. My parents got divorced when I was a few months old; with my mother, we were growing up by ourselves, and I was influenced a lot by my older sister’s music. I discovered smooth R&B, sexy pop, and revolutionary rock music. On the weekends, I had to go to my father’s house, where we had to stick to his conservative rules. Singing as a female in front of a man is not allowed in the Jewish religion, so I had to hide my passions and navigate between the two worlds for many years. With my father, I consumed a lot of traditional Arabic & Israeli music with classical dramatic string arrangements. Over the years, I found a lot of similarities in all these genres. The vocals act as an instrument and are mostly the main focus. There are many songs I grew up on with the same topic – the tragedy of losing someone you love, but there are also so many uplifting songs with wild rhythms that bring people together to dance. Music that expresses endless hope, unheard stories, unity, and a strong appreciation of life even in the darkest times.\u00a0I use everything from my childhood in my music. I call it \u201d Arab \u2019n\u2019 B \u201c.<\/p>\n

S: The theme of our panel talk is “SHOW MUST GO ON.” In the face of personal and political challenges, how do you use your music to express and navigate through difficult times?<\/p>\n

A: Growing up alone without self-funds or financial support, I only felt heard once I sang. I got used to using my voice as my currency. It opened many doors for me and helped me find shelter and friends, and develop authentic relationships. With music, I’m able to share my uneasy life story by wrapping my drama in sweet, beautiful melodies. For example, my song “Therapy” is about the abuse and violence I experienced from my father, but it’s not the first thing you understand when you hear it, which made it easier for me to share it for the first time with the whole world. After years of not being allowed to be angry, cry, or share what’s on my mind loudly, I wrote so many simple songs about love and relationships. With time and a decent amount of therapy, I’m gaining more power to be S: Growing up in an environment of political and personal crisis must have had a profound impact on your perspective. How does your background shape the themes and messages in your music?<\/p>\n

A: I am political, but definitely not a politician, first of all, I am a woman, a survivor, and a child of a single mother, then add all the other titles you want to put on me. I see myself as a result of a broken system. My music is a reflection of who I am or who I thought I was. It is a basic need like breathing or eating that helps me to survive each day. I create music to capture specific moments or feelings and make them timeless, always aiming to hear the first note and tap into the same old emotions. I create music for the women who simply can\u2019t, for those who can only dance when nobody is watching, with the hope that one day, they will have access to hear me and know that I fought to amplify us. I create music for us and for anyone who is willing to work for better days.<\/p>\n

S: As an artist based in Berlin, how does the city’s vibrant and diverse artistic scene influence your work, and how do you contribute to the rich musical tapestry of Berlin?<\/p>\n

A: The artist’s community here in Berlin is so rich. It seems like whoever got to Berlin had the same need as me; to escape, find a new home, and bravely start a new chapter because we all deserve a real chance. The Berlin community taught me to find my peace, rest slowly, and always listen deeply. My community pushed me to look deep inside of me and always reach for help. I love working with people who understand the power of a collective and how crucial it is to invest in each other. When you work with those kinds of people, you don’t need to add much; just blend all together and make sure everyone is heard and credited. Together, we have created everything I have ever released. S: Your music is described as a reflection of your struggles. How do you see the role of music in addressing and raising awareness about social and political issues?<\/p>\n

A: Between the ages of 18 and 20, I served in the army as it is mandatory. I was a singer in a military band, and my role was to entertain soldiers, kids, and families almost every single day in harsh conditions. It was extremely traumatic, but I always try to find one good reason I had to go through it. For example, I learned that there are many defense layers in war, and you must communicate with each other about everything. Every role is extremely important, even the smallest one. I learned that wars or world crises take so much time to be solved and healed, and with time, the body gets exhausted, hurt, and traumatized. You must lift up your and others’ spirits, and fight your own darkness to see the sunrise again. I’m here to create safe spaces for people to connect again, be their escape from reality, and slowly bring back the trust and conversations about peace. My vulnerability allows others to be vulnerable. As a writer and a part of generations of Yemen writers, I have high respect for words, and I know that they have a huge impact, especially on me, when I sing them all over again and again and
