Opening last night at the Marta Herford Gallery, guests were given the chance to go much further than the city of Herford with Dutch photographer, Iwan Baan’s, new photo series. “52 Weeks, 52 Cities”, is a project exclusively developed for Marta Herford, where Baan takes the viewers on a journey around the world on the hunt for innovative and ingenious homes and construction projects, spotted in the most unexpected place.
\nFrom Calais, France, to Dallas, USA, over to Larabunga in Northern Ghana, and then Cairo, Egypt, the city-hopping Baan painstakingly looks for outstanding architecture projects in all corners of the world. Baan’s time and dedication that is put into every image and every leg of the journey is evident in this exhibition, with no route being too long or a town too far away for Baan to reach.\u00a0Short texts appear next to each photo, describing not only the building that we are looking at, but also the place it is in and the people in the images, and their day-to-day life. This documentary approach adds a level of human emotion to the work, something that is not regularly seen in architectural photography.
\nBaan’s collaboration with photography and architecture can also be seen in his work for leading architects such as Rem Koolhas, Herzog & de Meuron, and Zaha Hadid to name but a few. What makes Baan’s photography stand out from other architectural photography projects is his ability to blur the lines of where architectural photography ends and documentary photography starts, resulting in images that celebrate outstanding works of architecture, but also provide a commentary on the world that lies beyond the reach of our window.
