In the studio with Sibling and their radical vision for menswear<\/strong><\/p>\n

It turns out that 2008 will go down in history for more than the start of the global financial crisis. It\u00a0was also the year that Sibling was born. The lovechild of three parents \u2013 Cozette McCleery, Joe\u00a0Bates and Sid Bryan\u2013 the knitwear label has since gone on to take the world by storm.<\/p>\n

It didn\u2019t start that way. These three, who were friends before colleagues and who decided on Sibling while lounging around a pool in Ibiza, all had previous form with the fashion industry, with\u00a0Bryan and McCleery meeting at Bella Freud. For Sibling, though, they wanted something a bit different. Bates, the self-confessed loudest of the three, recalls the moment. \u201cWe started as an exercise in indulgence,\u201d he explains. \u201cWe presented the collection in May, outside of any fashion week, with a party. One of the points of our manifesto was not to sell anything.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s fair to say this strategy backfired. McCreery, currently sporting pink hair to match her pink leopard-print Sibling sweater, remembers \u201cbeing hounded by buyers from Beams.\u201d The Japanese department store, as usual, were onto something. As Bates says, Sibling was designed to bring back \u201cjoy in dressing\u201d, and as a label it has been as refreshing as a cola with lemon on a hot day. Uniquely menswear, sweaters were covered with appliqu\u00e9 rats, twinsets for boys were leopard-print and there were sequin tank tops. It had colour, wit and, crucially, knit.<\/p>\n

Fast-forward five years and that accidental flourish of success seems far from a flash in the pan.\u00a0When Sleek visited their studio in East London, the Sibling gang were huddled around a leather\u00a0sofa: Bates is smart in a double breasted jacket, while McCreery is in trademark Converse, that\u00a0pink sweater with matching hair and Sid, the quietest, wears a quiff, neon sneakers and some\u00a0interesting towelling shorts. Mycroft, the resident English bull terrier, later joins us, snuggling his substantial self on Bryan\u2019s lap.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The studio looks like it has been grown out of long ago. Jumpers from the autumn collection are piled on a sample table, while a huge box of buttons is propped up behind us. Sketches for the spring collection lean against a bookshelf and several younger members of the Sibling extended family are tapping on laptops. In short, it\u2019s the picture of a buzzy fashion label on the up in 2013.<\/p>\n

But for the figures at the centre of it, the story still comes back to 2008. \u201cEverything we worked on\u00a0for the first collection has been part of the brand since then,\u201d says McCreery. \u201cIt was like a primordial\u00a0soup of Sibling.\u201d Into the pot goes a hefty dose of texture, sorbet colours for boys and girls and\u00a0the kind of \u201cin\u201d references \u2013 ranging from cult classic punk oral history \u201cPlease Kill Me\u201d to tupperware parties \u2013 that are sure to score a set of devoted fans.<\/p>\n

Autumn\u2019s collections \u2013 for men and women \u2013 continue in that vein. In the Sibling world, a man will be wearing sweatshirts with \u201cPlease Kill Me\u201d emblazoned in ditsy flowers, long Fair Isle scarves in pink and, if they so desire, oversized rastafarian hats. Their girlfriends \u2013 or Sister, as the womenswear label, launched last year, is named \u2013 are in floral tea dresses photobombed with bold polka dots and huge pastel crochet cardigans inspired by Paula Yates, the rebellious British TV presenter of the Eighties. \u201cWe always have strong heroines,\u201d says Bates. \u201cI can\u2019t see how people\u00a0wouldn\u2019t be inspired by those women.\u201d<\/p>\n

Knit is, of course, as much at the heart of Sibling as pop culture references. Bryan is their master\u00a0knitter \u2013 having completed show pieces for Bella Freud, Alexander McQueen and Giles before the\u00a0label was established. He\u2019s brought his very skilled needles to the task of making yarn the height of hip. \u201cWe wouldn\u2019t be arrogant to say we were central to making knitwear cool again,\u201d says\u00a0 McCreery. \u201cWe certainly brought a spotlight to it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bates suggests the way that they have nailed a recognisable aesthetic in five years is down to self-sacrifice \u2013 if the three of them are a family, the label is the fourth member. \u201cI can sit there and design\u00a0something that I adore, but it might not work for the brand,\u201d he says. \u201cAnd I can do something I like less, but which is right.\u201d This \u201cfor the greater good\u201d policy has seen them go far. The label is now a highlight of London Fashion Week for both men\u2019s and women\u2019s, and has stockists everywhere from the UK to Japan, Germany and the US.<\/p>\n

Bates believes the trio also has the advantage that comes with being a little older and wiser than the\u00a0twentysomething designers who usually set up new labels. \u201cWe got all of the ego nonsense out of the way,\u201d he says. \u201cI\u2019m not saying we\u2019re the Waltons, either, but disagreements are never about ego.\u201d Five years after that Ibiza holiday, they\u2019re still not sick of each other. In fact, this Christmas they\u2019re off on a group trip to New York.<\/p>\n

The latest accolade to show they\u2019re on the right track comes right from the heart of the fashion\u00a0establishment. After competing against nine other talents in June, Sibling became European Finalists for the prestigious International Woolmark Prize. Their entry, typically, wasn\u2019t the standard\u00a0V-neck pullover. Instead, they made a knitted bodysuit accessorised with a purple pom-pom jacket. But the signs are all pointing one way: the label that started with at least a bit of anti-fashion about them are now firmly in its bosom.<\/p>\n

Nomination for the Woolmark is serious recognition (Karl Lagerfeld and Yves Saint Laurent were both previous winners), and Sibling have won $50,000 Australian dollars (around \u20ac35,000) and it gained them awareness in untapped markets. Next up is the international final which will take place in February during Milan Fashion Week \u2013something, you\u2019d have to agree, they have a fair chance of winning.<\/p>\n

Also on the Sibling agenda? A shop. \u201cFor us there\u2019s only so much you can do on a website. The feel of a garment, the tactility, is lost,\u201d says McCreery. \u201cSibling is about being a fashion family. To actually\u00a0have a shop would be a place to allow people to come in and feel part of that.\u201d With this plan in place, and these three at the helm, the family will soon be very extended indeed.<\/p>\n
