SLEEK: Let\u2019s rewind for a second, back to the early days. Was music always the loudest voice in your life, or did it sneak up on you? Was there a moment where you realized, \u201cOh, this is what I\u2019m meant to do?\u201d<\/p>\n

Rico Nasty: Music was always a big part of my life. My parents loved to play music in the house, and my dad made music too, we\u2019d freestyle together. It was just something we did as a family. Back then, it never felt like something I could do professionally. It was simply for fun.<\/p>\n

S: Your new album feels like a statement. What excites you the most as the release date approaches?<\/p>\n

RN: I\u2019m excited for people to hear me again, up close and personal. It\u2019s like an updated version of me.<\/p>\n

S: The album title ‘LETHAL’ carries a sense of danger, mortality, and urgency. What drew you to that concept, and how does it resonate throughout the album?<\/p>\n

RN: I was 27 while writing it, so I think my Saturn return played a role. That\u2019s what they say, right? It felt like a pivotal time, stepping into myself as an adult and adapting to this new stage of maturity. S: You have such a strong visual identity, from your music videos to your album art. Where did the idea for the ‘LETHAL’ album cover come from? Tell me about the needles, did it hurt?<\/p>\n

RN: The needles were real, but no, it didn\u2019t hurt! Actually, it was kind of relaxing. The needles symbolize life\u2019s changes, they can feel uncomfortable or even scary at first. I\u2019m not shy to admit that change can feel overwhelming. I overthink a lot: \u201cWill it work out? What happens if\u2026?\u201d But once I relax and take it step by step, I get through it.<\/p>\n

S: The term \u201cSugar Trap\u201d often defines your creative persona. Does being tied to that sound ever feel limiting?<\/p>\n

\u2028RN: People saw Sugar Trap<\/em> as a specific sound, but for me, it was always a personality thing. It represents the duality in me, the dark and the light. I love scary things and cute knick-knacks, cuddles and spikes. Early on, I worried about how long I\u2019d be expected to stick with it. But ultimately, Sugar Trap<\/em> is a mindset. It\u2019s about exploring all sides of myself freely. S: Do you explore other creative outlets like painting or design? How do they influence your music?<\/p>\n

\u2028RN: Absolutely. Creativity is a muscle, you have to keep it active, like going to the gym. When music starts to feel all-consuming, I turn to other things. I love doodling. It\u2019s not Van Gogh-level, but it keeps me inspired. Exploring different mediums gives me a fresh perspective when I return to music.<\/p>\n

S: Your lyrics often feel raw and intimate, like diary entries. Do you think being vulnerable in your personal life has deepened your songwriting?<\/p>\n

\u2028RN: I\u2019ve always been vulnerable, but I didn\u2019t always have the words to express it. Maybe it\u2019s a result of becoming an adult and growing into myself, there\u2019s that Saturn return thing again [laughs]. S: Rage has been central to your music. How has your relationship with rage evolved, and which song on LETHAL captures it best?<\/p>\n

\u2028RN: Rage will always be a big part of me. It was one of my early records that showed me what my voice could do when I took myself seriously. Now, it\u2019s evolved into tracks like \u201cSmoke Break,\u201d \u201cSon of a Gun,\u201d and \u201cGrave.\u201d I\u2019ve learned to express it in different ways, but it\u2019s still there, it\u2019s part of me I\u2019ll never lose.<\/p>\n

S: You\u2019ve paved the way in a genre that\u2019s still a battlefield for women. Do you feel like the distinction between \u201cfemale rappers\u201d and just \u201crappers\u201d affects you, and how do you see the scene evolving?<\/p>\n

RN: Honestly, this whole debate is really upsetting. People always pinpoint that I\u2019m a woman navigating this industry. Why am I a \u201cfemale rapper\u201d because I have tits? I don\u2019t want to be reduced to \u201ejust being a woman\u201c, I rap better than most men! Why don\u2019t we call them \u201cmale rappers\u201d? They\u2019re just rappers, so why can\u2019t I be the same? I\u2019m whoever I want to be. RN: Ah, I love a good fashion yap, definitely! It feels like I am becoming the person I\u2019ve always wanted to be. I have always been expressive through my looks, I love to get creative with it. Now it’s comfort over everything, with no pressure to appease anyone. Everyday life drives this reimagination. Stay ready so you don\u2019t have to get ready [laughs]. That’s my mantra.<\/p>\n
