Samirah Breuer: \u201cSchweigen \u00e4ndert nichts\u201d<\/p>\n
23-year-old Samirah Breuer is done playing it polite. She\u2019s now drawn to roles that truly explore<\/p>\n
what it means to be human \u2014 including the flaws \u2014 something she found deeply embedded in<\/p>\n
the concept of KRANK Berlin, the new series recently released on Apple TV. In it, she plays<\/p>\n
Olivia, a paramedic in her early twenties working at a hospital in Berlin-Neuk\u00f6lln, nicknamed<\/p>\n
\u201cKRANK\u201d \u2014 a German word that means both \u201cill\u201d and serves as shorthand for Krankenhaus<\/p>\n
(hospital).<\/p>\n
From the moment Breuer accepted the role, she knew this wouldn\u2019t be a typical German<\/p>\n
medical drama. During the shoot, she not only learned about emergency care and the<\/p>\n
healthcare system behind it, but also discovered what kind of actress she wants to become.<\/p>\n
FRANKA KLAPROTH: What were your first thoughts and expectations when you heard<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n
about the series Krank Berlin and your role, Olivia?<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n
SB<\/i><\/b>: Krank Berlin<\/i> felt completely different right from the start. I could immediately sense that the<\/p>\n
right people were involved, people who genuinely cared. The characters weren\u2019t one-<\/p>\n
dimensional. I had a really good feeling and instantly wanted to be part of it.<\/p>\n
FK: How did the production ensure authenticity on set?<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n
SB<\/b>: A lot of effort went into making everything as real as possible. Many of the extras were actual<\/p>\n
nurses and medical staff, so they knew exactly how things work. I also spent time at a fire station<\/p>\n
with a colleague. They showed us how to use the emergency vehicle equipment, how the alerts<\/p>\n
come in, how to handle everything properly. We had a medical advisor on set for nearly two<\/p>\n
months who went through every scene involving procedures with us in detail. We rehearsed the<\/p>\n
emergency room scenes for days, like a choreography. Everything had to be exact: where to<\/p>\n
walk, what to say, when to insert the tube. It was super precise.<\/p>\n
FK: You also study psychology. Is that a good complement to your acting?<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n
SB<\/b> Studying psychology is kind of my balance. Acting can sometimes feel like it\u2019s all about your<\/p>\n
body, your looks, or whether you \u201cfit\u201d a role. Even if you\u2019re good, it often comes down to<\/p>\n
whether you\u2019re the \u201ctype\u201d someone imagined. At some point, I really craved something that<\/p>\n
wasn\u2019t about appearance, something where I could use my mind again. It\u2019s also especially<\/p>\n
helpful when I play characters with complex inner lives.<\/p>\n
For me, preparation doesn\u2019t end when the camera stops rolling. I go home and keep<\/p>\n
thinking about scenes, reworking things in my head. I make playlists for my characters, I<\/p>\n
explore emotional layers and try different colors, different energies. Creating a character<\/p>\n
is like building a human being from the inside out .FK: Does acting require that emotional intensity?<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n
SB<\/b> For me, yes. I immerse myself fully, building stories around the character with playlists and<\/p>\n
moodboards. Acting isn\u2019t nine-to-five \u2014 I keep processing scenes even after filming.<\/p>\n
FK: Are there days when emotions don\u2019t come?<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n
SB<\/b> Definitely. Sometimes life gets in the way, but you still have to be present. Fake tears won\u2019t<\/p>\n
cut it; the audience must feel it. You can cry from frustration, rage, or exhaustion. Switching<\/p>\n
emotional states all day is exhausting \u2014 like living five lives in one.<\/p>\n
FK: Olivia often clashes with her colleague Olaf, a Boomer who\u2019s emotionally shut down to<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n
cope with the job. How did you bring that generational tension to life with Bernhard<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n
Sch\u00fctz?<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n
SB<\/b> We had a warm off-set relationship and worked closely on their dialogue. We avoided<\/p>\n
clich\u00e9s like \u201cGen Z on phones\u201d or \u201cbitter Boomers,\u201d showing two real people shaped by different<\/p>\n
experiences. Olaf tries to protect Olivia from disappointment, while she still believes\u2014maybe<\/p>\n
naively\u2014that change is possible.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s a dynamic you see in society too: young people full of energy and conviction, and older<\/p>\n
generations who\u2019ve tried, failed, and urge them to be more \u201crealistic.\u201d But I think it\u2019s so important<\/p>\n
that this youthful drive exists. We need people who haven\u2019t been knocked down by the<\/p>\n
system yet. That hope is where change starts.<\/p>\n
SLEEK: Can you tell us a bit more about Nola, your role in Schattenseite, and how you built<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n
that character compared to Olivia?<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n
SB<\/b>: Nola deals a lot with anxiety \u2014 panic episodes and an entirely different emotional texture<\/p>\n
than Olivia. So I approached her from a very different angle. I made new playlists, new<\/p>\n
moodboards, and tried to build a completely new human from scratch. Every time I get a script, I<\/p>\n
start compiling references \u2014 images, sounds, colors \u2014 anything that helps me construct a<\/p>\n
psychological world. For me, that\u2019s the fun part. It\u2019s like becoming an emotional detective.<\/p>\n
FK: What’s on your acting bucket list?<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n
SB: <\/i><\/b>I don\u2019t have a certain dream project. What really matter to me is being given the space to<\/p>\n
play full, complex people. That includes showing flaws, contradictions, vulnerability. Also, I\u2019m<\/p>\n
particularly interested when it brings visibility to something overlooked or underrepresented.<\/p>\n
FK: Are there roles you avoid?<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n
SB<\/b>: I don\u2019t want to play a flat, tokenized character that just checks a diversity box. You can tell<\/p>\n
when a role is written just to hit some quota, where the character barely speaks, only speaks<\/p>\n
broken German, and hits every lazy stereotype. It\u2019s not that I\u2019m against playing characters with<\/p>\n
cultural specificity. But the context matters. What\u2019s the intention behind this portrayal? We all<\/p>\n
have a responsibility in the stories we tell. I know it\u2019s a privilege to say no. But I see that as part of<\/p>\n
my responsibility, too. Sometimes I\u2019ll enter a conversation about a script, see if there\u2019s space to<\/p>\n
shift things, to add nuance. If not, I walk away.<\/p>\n
FK: Was saying no something you had to learn over time?SB<\/b> Definitely. But after all my experiences, I\u2019ve gained clarity about who I am and what I stand<\/p>\n
for\u2014even if it costs me jobs. Speaking up takes courage, and the industry doesn\u2019t make it easy.<\/p>\n
But we have to challenge the system; otherwise, what\u2019s the point? Maybe that\u2019s where I\u2019m a little<\/p>\n
like Olivia. Some tell me to stay quiet and just play along, but that\u2019s not me. Staying silent<\/p>\n

Is that a good complement to your acting?<\/p>\n SB: Studying psychology is kind of my balance. Acting can sometimes feel like it\u2019s all about your body, your looks, or whether you \u201cfit\u201d a role. Even if you\u2019re good, it often comes down to whether you\u2019re the \u201ctype\u201d someone imagined. At some point, I really craved something that wasn\u2019t about appearance, something where I could use my mind again. It\u2019s also especially helpful when I play characters with complex inner lives. For me, preparation doesn\u2019t end when the camera stops rolling. I go home and keep thinking about scenes, reworking things in my head. I make playlists for my characters, I explore emotional layers and try different colors, different energies. Creating a character is like building a human being from the inside out.<\/p>\n FK: Does acting require that emotional intensity?<\/p>\n SB: For me, yes. I immerse myself fully, building stories around the character with playlists and moodboards. Switching emotional states all day is exhausting \u2014 like living five lives in one.<\/p>\n FK: Olivia often clashes with her colleague Olaf, a Boomer who\u2019s emotionally shut down to cope with the job. How did you bring that generational tension to life with Bernhard Sch\u00fctz?<\/p>\n SB: We had a warm off-set relationship and worked closely on their dialogue. We avoided clich\u00e9s like \u201cGen Z on phones\u201d or \u201cbitter Boomers,\u201d showing two real people shaped by different experiences. Olaf tries to protect Olivia from disappointment, while she still believes\u2014maybe naively\u2014that change is possible. It\u2019s a dynamic you see in society too: young people full of energy and conviction, and older generations who\u2019ve tried, failed, and urge them to be more \u201crealistic.\u201d But I think it\u2019s so important that this youthful drive exists. We need people who haven\u2019t been knocked down by the system yet. Every time I get a script, I start compiling references \u2014 images, sounds, colors \u2014 anything that helps me construct a psychological world. For me, that\u2019s the fun part. What really matters to me is being given the space to play full, complex people. That includes showing flaws, contradictions, vulnerability. It\u2019s not that I\u2019m against playing characters with cultural specificity. But the context matters. What\u2019s the intention behind this portrayal? We all have a responsibility in the stories we tell. I know it\u2019s a privilege to say no. But I see that as part of my responsibility, too. Sometimes I\u2019ll enter a conversation about a script, see if there\u2019s space to shift things, to add nuance. If not, I walk away.<\/p>\n FK: Was saying no something you had to learn over time?<\/p>\n SB: Definitely. But after all my experiences, I\u2019ve gained clarity about who I am and what I stand for\u2014even if it costs me jobs. Speaking up takes courage, and the industry doesn\u2019t make it easy.
