There is a kind of communion of the ones who have scars. I am a human being in need to transcend myself, although it is quite difficult to live in a perfect coherence with what you believe and think. But I accept this imperfection. As an artist, in my work, I reflect this battle in me between tradition and modernity.

BB So you didn’t have any hesitations to have these references in your film?

OL I don’t care about the consequences and I don’t calculate. I have faith that there is a net. I jump and there is always a net. We made this movie to break rules, it could have been a disaster but I am in Cannes, this is the gift. There is always a gift. The mechanism of life is pushing you to the border of the habit, asking you who you are. What apparently is a catastrophe, an accident, may be a gift given with some distance and time.

BB On a production level, what was the most challenging part throughout the process?

OL I started with this film already in 2011. The hardest part is understanding your own intention. Am I doing a good service? I am working for who? Is my intention pure, am I connected with my essence, or maybe I am more connected with my ego? To observe your true intention is very difficult. It’s always this dialogue with yourself, between ambition and pureness in my intention. The second hardest part is receiving rejections. We had support from Arte Germany, not in France, as they told us that they don’t want spectators to suffer. I understood them, but they didn’t understand me. I do want to shake the spectator, scratch something inside, but in a beneficial way. We are all actually suffering from sleeping.

BB What does the desert represent in your cinematic language?

OL It connects me to the south. I think poetry is to go with the language so far until its edge. In cinema, I go with the image until the edge, to de-materialize.. The desert, that vastness, allows me to evoke that kind of nakedness or nothingness.

With the music too, we went to pure techno, to beat and sound. Kind of de-materializing the landscape and soundscape. The movie is starting a bit like a documentary turning into adventure, then survival, and finally… desert. But always under the sheltering sky. In the end, it’s all about a journey which is actually interior.

Crossing Sirât: Oliver Laxe on Faith, Film, and Fire - Sleek Magazine

{"@context":"https://schema.org","@graph":[{"@type":"WebSite","@id":"https://www.sleek-mag.com/#website","url":"https://www.sleek-mag.com/","name":"Sleek Magazine","description":"Sleek is Germany’s leading independent media house/brand for creativity and innovation located in Berlin the creative capital of the world.
