Waris Ahluwalia is an Indian-American designer and actor. Born in 1975 in India, he grew up in New York City from the age of five and today divides his time between India and the US. SLEEK:<\/strong> For the photoshoot, you play the role of an actor who is caught between thought and expression. What fascinates you about this state of limbo?<\/p>\n WARIS AHLUWALIA:<\/strong> That space is not empty \u2013 it\u2019s charged. We tend to think of expression as the point, but the moment before is where the real negotiation happens. Thought is still fluid there, unrevealed. Once something is spoken, it begins to harden into identity. Limbo is the last place where possibility is still intact. We all live for possibility.<\/p>\n SLEEK:<\/strong> Every glance out the window, every pause before a word, becomes part of the process. How consciously do you perceive these micro-gestures in your own creative work?<\/p>\n WA: <\/strong>Over time, you become attuned to the subtleties. As I mentioned earlier, we think creativity exists only in the decisive gesture, but it\u2019s shaped by the quieter ones \u2013 the breath, the hesitation, the moment of looking away. These are signals. Ignoring them is like speaking over someone who is trying to tell you the truth. Externally, the work may appear to be about point A and point B, but the real beauty lives in the space in between.<\/p>\n SLEEK:<\/strong> The Montblanc pieces do not seem like props, but rather like companions. What significance do objects and tools have when you are wrestling with ideas?<\/p>\n WA:<\/strong> Tools hold memory. When you return to the same object, you return to a state of mind you\u2019ve inhabited before. A pen, a notebook, even a table \u2013 they become witnesses. They\u2019ve seen you unsure, searching, arriving. That continuity is reassuring. What allows you personally to endure this state without wanting to resolve it immediately?<\/p>\n WA:<\/strong> Age helps. Experience teaches you that not everything unfolds on your schedule. As unpleasant as that may be at times, there\u2019s a humility in letting time do its part. When you stop trying to control the tempo, you begin to notice what the slowness is offering. I didn\u2019t always endure it well. There was a time when stillness felt like delay, like something was going wrong. Now I recognise that stretched feeling as part of the experience of making \u2013 the moment when you are no longer pushing forward, but are being asked to stay. We live mostly in chronological time \u2013 the steady movement from one thing to the next. But there is another experience of time, where a moment deepens instead of passing. In those stretches, time feels less like sequence and more like presence. Staying has its own texture. You begin to notice small things \u2013 the quality of light shifting, the sound of your own breath, the way a thought changes shape if you don\u2019t grab it too quickly. Time doesn\u2019t feel empty there. It feels inhabited. Experience softens the urge to resolve everything. You start to trust that not arriving is also a form of movement. You\u2019re waiting until the work feels inevitable, not just possible.<\/p>\n SLEEK:<\/strong> You have been living in New York City for many years. How does this city influence your creative work process?<\/p>\n WA:<\/strong> The city teaches you to hold opposites: noise and solitude, urgency and waiting. It forces you to find stillness internally, because externally there is always motion. That tension sharpens awareness.
