This year, the legendary jazz musician MILES DAVIS<\/a> (1926-1991) would have turned 100. Few people have left such a lasting mark on culture, not only through their work but through the ideas they offered about creativity, discipline and selfhood. Davis’s observation reminds us that becoming oneself is a long process. To truly “play like yourself”, whether as an artist, thinker or citizen, requires intention and dedication. It demands years of learning, imitation, experimentation and failure. One’s own voice emerges not from avoid- ing influence but from passing through it. Perhaps this is why the idea remains so compelling. Play allows us to test possibilities without certainty, to inhabit ambiguity, that define human experience. The self is not discovered fully formed. It is shaped through sustained engagement with the world and with others. Play is neither frivolous nor narrowly productive.
