Sometimes, a photograph says everything without saying a word. And sometimes, even though you know that, you still have this incredible urge to talk about what you see. At least that’s the feeling you get walking through Three Chords & Two Cameras<\/em> at BBA Gallery<\/a>. Bowie. Brian Baker from Bad Religion. Billy Idol. Wendy O. Williams holding a huge hammer. Frank Carter. Tattoos. Microphones. Smoke. Cigarette butts. Quiet black and white portraits next to explosive live moments. Every photograph feels like a glimpse into one of the wildest and most authentic subcultures this world has seen: punk.<\/p>\n

The exhibition, which opened this month in the heart of Berlin, brings together the work of Michael Grecco<\/a> and Per Schorn<\/a>, two photographers whose paths cross somewhere between music and the power of the image. Grecco’s internationally acclaimed series Days of Punk<\/em> captures the icons of the 70s and 80s on and off stage. Loud and chaotic one moment, vulnerable and human the next. Schorn, on the other hand, approaches punk from a different angle. Through his long running Photo Booth<\/em> project, he invited punk rock musicians from the 90s in front of his camera, using clean, high contrast lighting to reduce every portrait to what really matters: personality, expression and attitude.<\/p>\n

AMELIE BACHERT<\/strong> Let\u2019s dive right in. Who’s the biggest punk icon?<\/p>\n

PER SCHORN<\/strong> It depends on the country. In the UK, I’d say The Clash. The legacy of the Sex Pistols has changed over the last few years. In the US, it’s definitely the Ramones.<\/p>\n

MICHAEL GRECCO<\/strong> Johnny Rotten made himself the face of anarchy. He was the loudest and most obnoxious voice of the movement. And because of that, he put himself out in front of all the other anarchists.<\/p>\n

AB<\/strong> Have you ever met him?<\/p>\n

MG<\/strong> I’ve photographed him many times. He’s a piece of shit. A smart piece of shit.<\/p>\n

AB<\/strong> Per, why do you think the Sex Pistols’ legacy has changed?<\/p>\n

PS<\/strong> Punk was always bigger than one person. Sometimes the music survives better than the people behind it. Look at the Dead Kennedys. They made incredible records, but they don’t even speak to each other anymore. Sometimes personal conflicts get in the way of the legacy.<\/p>\n

AB<\/strong> How did the two of you end up exhibiting together?<\/p>\n

MG<\/strong> The gallery suggested it. Per had photographed punk icons from the 90s, while I’d photographed the 70s and 80s. It felt like a natural fit. It’s funny because our careers almost crossed paths. I started as a photojournalist before moving into portrait photography. Per came from commercial portraiture and later found his way into punk.<\/p>\n

AB<\/strong> What do you see now that all these photographs are hanging together?<\/p>\n

PS<\/strong> What I love is that they feel timeless. You can’t always tell whether a picture was taken in the 70s, 80s or 90s. Certain details keep coming back. The shirts, the graphic designs, the graffiti. It all feels connected.<\/p>\n

MG<\/strong> These negatives sat in my file cabinets for forty years before I started scanning them again. Looking back, I realised what an extraordinary time it was. In the US, punk was a musical rebellion. In the UK, it was political as well. We didn’t care about fitting in. We just wanted to play our music. I always compare it to today. I photographed Lux Interior from The Cramps backstage after he’d lost his clothes on stage. He’s standing there with his dick in a hot dog bun. Justin Bieber isn’t going to do that. That attitude changed music. Back then, the attitude was, “We don’t give a shit. Fuck everyone. We’re going to play our music.” Sting once said that without punk, The Police would never have gotten airplay. AB<\/strong> Could a movement like punk still happen today?<\/p>\n

PS<\/strong> Maybe not punk itself, but I think we’re getting close to another counterculture. Whenever politics become more extreme and the gap between rich and poor grows, something new usually emerges. But it doesn’t have to be punk. It could be electronic music, hip hop, country or something we haven’t even heard yet. Whatever that reconnects the people. Culture always responds when society changes.<\/p>\n

MG<\/strong> I’m not so sure. Punk was a direct response to unemployment in the UK at the time and to Margaret Thatcher’s policies. But it also happened because the music industry was completely closed off. If you were an outsider, you had almost no chance of getting heard. Today, it’s different. A rebellious band can still find an audience online. I think if there was going to be another punk movement, it would have happened already. The conditions for that kind of rebellion have been there ever since Trump was first elected in 2016. But it hasn’t happened. I think that’s because the music industry has opened up a little more, giving outsiders more ways to be heard.<\/p>\n

PS<\/strong> When Trump was first elected, Fat Mike put out a sampler of Rock Against Bush<\/em> records to raise political awareness. But people didn’t react the way they did in the 70s. Maybe social media changed that.<\/p>\n

MG<\/strong> Social media has democratised music. The big commercial artists still dominate, but it’s easier than ever to discover smaller bands. Back then, radio decided what you heard. It was safe, polished music. Punk existed because people wanted something real.<\/p>\n

AB<\/strong> You once called that music “pablum.”<\/p>\n

MG<\/strong> Exactly. Baby food. Baby music. Stupid Music. Music without anything to say. The funny thing is, we never imagined anyone would still be talking about punk fifty years later. We weren’t trying to create a legacy. We were just part of the movement.<\/p>\n

AB<\/strong> Looking back now, how does it feel that punk has become part of music history?<\/p>\n

MG<\/strong> The timing of the book of Days of Punk<\/em> was actually perfect. About ten years ago there was a real resurgence of interest in punk, and that’s when I started bringing these photographs back out. I was the executive producer for this documentary series, called Punk<\/em>, and what struck me while researching was how controlled the music industry used to be. Record companies realised there was more money in records than almost any other form of entertainment. They started manufacturing bands, testing songs with focus groups and pushing whatever they thought would sell. It wasn’t authentic. AB<\/strong> You could argue parts of the industry still work that way.<\/p>\n

PS<\/strong> Sure, but we also have to remember that punk was originally about live fast, die young. Don\u2019t regret anything you do today. Nobody expected those musicians to still be around decades later. The ones who survived became incredible artists. Linda Perry is a great example. She started with 4 Non Blondes and went on to produce artists like Pink. New Order grew out of Joy Division. Punk didn’t disappear. It evolved.<\/p>\n

MG<\/strong> And it gave people permission to make music differently. It wasn’t just about shouting, “I am an antichrist.” The first time I heard Love Will Tear Us Apart<\/em>, it completely blew my mind. The production, the sound, everything felt new. Punk opened the door to post punk, goth, new wave and so many other directions. Suddenly, people realised they didn’t have to follow the rules.<\/p>\n

PS<\/strong> I’d even say that without that shift, a band like Kraftwerk wouldn’t have had the same impact. People understood that they were allowed to invent something new. I see the same spirit in techno culture. Different music, but the same idea of creating your own space.<\/p>\n

AB<\/strong> Is it harder to provoke people today?<\/p>\n

MG<\/strong> Definitely. We’ve seen so much already. Social media has changed that. I still discover amazing new bands because of it, but genuinely shocking people has become much harder.<\/p>\n

PS<\/strong> I agree. Mohawks, coloured hair and ripped jeans have become fashion. Nobody looks twice anymore. Maybe fetish culture still provokes people, but apart from that it’s difficult. Things that were shocking in the 70s are completely normal today.<\/p>\n

AB<\/strong> Maybe Berlin isn’t the best place to judge that. We\u2019re sitting right across KitKat, and it\u2019s completely normal here.<\/p>\n

MG<\/strong> Probably not. This is the birthplace of E-Pop. When Bowie came to produce it.<\/p>\n

AB<\/strong> You have photographed Bowie as well, right?<\/p>\n

AB<\/strong> Which photograph in the exhibition means the most to you?<\/p>\n

MG<\/strong> The Poison Ivy portrait. I rediscovered it while scanning the archive, and it’s still my favourite. We used to say at the Boston Herald<\/em>, “That’s the shot.” Sometimes you see a photograph and you immediately know it.<\/p>\n

AB<\/strong> How do you know it?<\/p>\n

MG<\/strong> You just know. I remember doing a celebrity shoot for a special issue of People<\/em> magazine, back before Photoshop, AI, or digital cameras. Everything was analogue. You had to get the focus, lighting, and exposure right in the moment. We shot about 50 rolls of film, but there was one image of Jet Li flying through the air with smoke around him where you just knew, that’s the shot. It was the kind of picture that would stop a reader.<\/p>\n

AB<\/strong> Per, what about you? Which photograph means the most to you?<\/p>\n

PS<\/strong> For me, it’s less about one photograph than the whole project. The series started almost by accident. Walter from Wizo asked me to shoot some promo photos before a tour. I came up with the photo booth idea, and afterwards he said, “You should do this with more bands.” He’s the reason this project exists. What means even more to me is what happened afterwards. I became friends with people I admired for years. When Brian Baker called the book I made from my photographs \u201ca punk rock yearbook\u201d, or Chuck Ragan called it \u201ca piece of music history\u201d, that meant a lot. I was just a twenty-something punk kid who couldn’t get press accreditation, so I started photographing bands on my own. The fact that they all trusted me enough to take part is what made the book possible.<\/p>\n

AB<\/strong> The two of you have very different photographic styles. Michael, your work often captures artists on stage. Per, yours is much more in the backstage. Do you think both approaches can reveal who someone really is?<\/p>\n

MG<\/strong> That’s always the goal. I started as a photojournalist, but I was never interested in simply documenting what happened. I wanted to create something. You can actually see that in these photographs. I moved from live shots to portraiture. In the end, it’s all about the connection. Whether it’s Joe Strummer, Billy Idol or Poison Ivy, what matters is that moment when someone lets their guard down. If you make that connection, the portrait works.<\/p>\n

PS<\/strong> I think both our photographs do that. What surprised us while preparing the exhibition was that we’d never photographed the same band, even though we’ve both spent decades around the punk scene. The people whose music we admired trusted us with their time. That’s something I’ll always be grateful for.<\/p>\n

MG<\/strong> That’s been one of the nicest parts of showing this work. The bands look at these photographs now and see themselves differently. AB<\/strong> How has punk changed you as people?<\/p>\n

PS<\/strong> It\u2019s hard to say, because I don’t know who I’d be without it. What punk taught me was honesty and looking after other people. If someone falls in the mosh pit, you pick them up. If someone needs help, you help them. It also taught me to respect people for who they are. That’s something I’ve carried with me ever since.<\/p>\n

MG<\/strong> What always stood out to me was how accepting the scene was. My first close gay friend came out through the punk scene, and nobody cared. People accepted you for who you were. That’s what I loved about it. The music mattered, but the community mattered just as much.<\/p>\n

AB<\/strong> If punk had one message for today, what would it be?<\/p>\n

MG<\/strong> Fuck Trump.<\/p>\n

Leave something worth fighting for to the next generation. That’s what punk is about.<\/p>\n

PS<\/strong> Exactly. Keep going to small shows. Support independent bands. If you don’t like one concert, don’t blame the band. Just go to the next one. You might discover your new favourite.<\/p>\n
