There’s a pretty good chance that if you ask a German who the best rappers in the country are, one name will come up: Souly<\/a>.\u00a0Of course. With his smooth, dark sound that occasionally drifts into something almost spacey, he has been shaping the scene for years, inspiring his audience, influencing younger artists and confidently staying true to his own style.<\/p>\n

One line from one of his biggest songs became the starting point for this conversation. Loosely translated, it goes: \u201cWho decides what\u2019s right? Mask on. Mask off.\u201d And because Souly had just played the biggest show of his career so far, we decided to take those words literally: A few days after he returned home from Splash Festival, we sat down with him to find out who Souly is when the mask comes off. AMELIE BACHERT<\/strong> Hi Souly, what does the \u201cY\u201d add to the soul?<\/p>\n

SOULY<\/strong> Me.<\/p>\n

AB<\/strong> I saw you dropped Zwilling<\/em> at the beginning of the month. Who’s your twin? Souly or Luca, your real name?<\/p>\n

S<\/strong> I’d actually say there isn’t really both anymore. They’re the same now. Souly and Luca. But I do have a lot of twins in a different sense. It’s more about the fact that I keep working with the same producers. There are three of them, and two are actual twins. It would’ve been a dream if the third one had been a twin too. Then I’d have had four of them (laughs). By now we’re basically brothers. We know every side of each other. It really feels like we’re all twins. You know what the other person’s thinking without them having to say it. That’s kind of what the song is about.<\/p>\n

AB<\/strong> That’s beautiful. So the song is dedicated to the people behind everything with you?<\/p>\n

S<\/strong> Yeah, totally.<\/p>\n

AB<\/strong> You just said that Souly and Luca are basically the same person now. Was that different when you first started?<\/p>\n

S<\/strong> Definitely. In the beginning, I spent a long time making music before anything took off. Personally, that never bothered me because I was doing it just because I loved it. But you still try to protect yourself somehow and end up playing a role. Now that I can actually make a living from music, there’s no reason for me to pretend to be anything. Either my artist persona got softer, or the private version of me got tougher. Either way, now there’s just me.<\/p>\n

AB<\/strong> So do you feel like you can be more honest in your music today?<\/p>\n

S<\/strong> Yeah, completely. Zwilling<\/em> was a perfect example. We made that song only about six weeks ago. Then suddenly you’re performing it at ten at night on the main stage at Splash. Everything happened so fast that it really hit me: I can’t say something as Souly that I wouldn’t stand behind as Luca. And vice versa. That’s super important to me because I don’t want to represent something I’m not. I’m a very moral person. I live by my principles. I have no interest in doing something I don’t actually stand behind just to make money.<\/p>\n

AB<\/strong> It’s interesting, because that\u2019s kind of the never-ending question, isn’t it? Whether you can separate the artist from the art. And you’re making a very conscious decision not to.<\/p>\n

AB<\/strong> Yeah, totally. There are so many huge artists whose impact on music and culture is undeniable, no matter who they are as people. But when you say you can be more honest now, are there still emotions that are hard for you to put into music?<\/p>\n

S<\/strong> Happiness, weirdly enough. I actually prefer listening to music that hurts. I connect with it way more than with happy music. I’m not an unusually sad person or anything. I have my phases, sure, but overall, I’ve got a pretty healthy grip on my life, and honestly, I like waking up in a good mood. But I still listen to depressing music, and that’s what hypes me up.<\/p>\n

AB<\/strong> Really? That actually gives you energy?<\/p>\n

S<\/strong> Yeah. I just connect to it way more. I think it’s because you naturally spend more time reflecting when you’re not doing well. When you’re happy, you’re just… happy. Maybe that’s why writing about happiness is actually harder for me. Right now, I’ve been listening to Versace Python<\/em> by Riff Raff nonstop. I’d say that’s a happy song. But even then, when you really listen to the lyrics, there’s still a bit of sadness in there. He sings, “As the days keep turning, as the world keeps burning, as my soul keeps learning. Tears fall from the castles around my heart”.<\/p>\n

AB<\/strong> But isn’t that kind of true for happiness in general? Even joy always comes with a second side. There’s doubt, nostalgia, that moment of realizing it won’t last forever.<\/p>\n

S<\/strong> Honestly, that’s something that runs through my whole creative process. This idea of duality. One thing only exists because of the other. And I’m really bad at committing to one fixed thing. Most of the time it’s just a snapshot of how I feel. Right now I’m doing great, tomorrow that song might not feel like me anymore. But I still have to be able to perform it tomorrow, even if I’m in a completely different headspace. I think that’s why I’ve become pretty good at leaving things open. Just look at my projects. There\u2019s Bossbaby Tape<\/em>. On one hand I’m a boss, on the other I’m a baby. I’m both. Traence<\/em> was the name of an emotion I made up. And Moth Music<\/em> is exactly that. Music for a moth. Everything I do is instinctive. Every project is just another step that’s bigger and more overwhelming than the last. AB<\/strong> Yeah, I get that. The moth is such a strong image on its own.<\/p>\n

S It’s the ugly in the beautiful and the beautiful in the ugly.<\/p>\n

AB<\/strong> And maybe it’s also not the thing society would choose first. It’s a moth, not a butterfly. I like that everyone can decide for themselves what those kinds of abstract ideas mean. Earlier, you mentioned Splash. That was the biggest show of your career so far. I saw a video from your main stage set that was captioned “<\/em>Souly’s I Made It Moment.”<\/em> Was that your I made it moment?<\/p>\n

S<\/strong> Yeah, I’d say so. Which song was playing in that clip?<\/p>\n

AB<\/strong> The intro to Maske weg<\/em>.<\/p>\n

S<\/strong> Ah, yeah. That was this moment at Splash where I thought, okay, everything’s gone well up to this point. Now there are only three or four songs left that I can just enjoy. The work is done. Now I just get to take in what’s happening. I was wearing that hood, too, so I couldn’t actually see that much. It sounds weird, but from up on stage, it doesn’t even look as huge as you’d think. It’s all just little pixels.<\/p>\n

AB<\/strong> Everything’s so far away, and you’ve got all those lights in your face.<\/p>\n

S<\/strong> Exactly. And I’m shortsighted, I’ve got long hair covering half my face. I’ve kind of set everything up so I can disappear into my own little world whenever I want.<\/p>\n

AB<\/strong> Yeah, if you really want to enjoy it, you kind of need that moment where it’s just you.<\/p>\n

S<\/strong> Yeah. And in my normal life, I’m not someone who walks around thinking, today is all about me (laughs). But Splash was one of those rare moments where you can confidently say, without feeling guilty, right now it actually is about me and what I’ve built.<\/em> That’s exactly what I was feeling in that video.<\/p>\n

AB<\/strong> A real full circle moment. I read that you first connected with hip hop when you were living in Osnabr\u00fcck. How do you still hear that influence in your music today, and what has changed since then?<\/p>\n

S<\/strong> My taste has definitely changed. One thing people always tell me, even though I don’t really see it myself, is that my music doesn’t follow typical hip hop formulas. Before I got into rap, I listened to completely different music, so I learned songwriting in a totally different way. Then I discovered hip hop, but weirdly not Sido or Bushido. It was Huss und Hodn or Retrogott. Real OG, true school stuff. Sometimes there’d be a hook, sometimes there wouldn’t. And if it got too pop, people hated it. That made total sense to me back then. But I think I’m naturally good at writing catchy melodies, so all those influences kind of got mixed AB<\/strong> Compared to that, what do you think about the current German rap scene?<\/p>\n

S<\/strong> I actually think it’s coming back. The Youngins and this new generation of German rap are super exciting to me. They don’t give a shit if a song is one minute, two minutes or five. They’re using weirder sounds again and they’re not building everything around formulas anymore. Sure, sometimes they’re maybe trying a little too hard to be different, but I’d take that any day over people just chasing whatever works. It feels like the Youngins aren’t making music to crack the algorithm anymore. They’re making music because they actually want to. That’s how we used to do it and honestly, that’s still how we do it. That just feels fresh.<\/p>\n

AB<\/strong> Yeah, I’m totally with you. A few years ago, you could really tell that songs were being made to work on TikTok. Now it feels like everything’s drifting back toward something more handcrafted, more analogue.<\/p>\n

S<\/strong> I think people are just exhausted. I know I am. I’m completely drained by all the outside input. I honestly can’t be bothered anymore. As addicted as I used to be to social media, I don’t even want to consume it now. Once you stop, you realize how much better you feel. Songs sound better. That movie you’ve been meaning to watch for months is way better when the internet hasn’t already dissected it to death. The Youngins I know are aware of everything that’s going on, but they consume way less. Sure, they pick up sounds from here and there, but they’re more creative and freer because they’re not living on those apps all day.<\/p>\n

AB<\/strong> That’s exactly what wears me out about it. I get tired of songs so quickly now because they’re played to death on social media. It feels like music has become disposable, even for me.<\/p>\n

S<\/strong> We’re just oversaturated. Everything is oversaturated. At some point, you need to listen to Mexican cartel music or something just to feel anything (laughs).<\/p>\n

AB<\/strong> Maybe I should give that a try. Do you think AI is part of that too? It’s become such a huge part of music now.<\/p>\n

S<\/strong> I just don’t get the appeal of AI in music. Sure, it’s a money glitch. You can make AI music, get it onto playlists and make money. But why would you want AI making music? Put AI on an assembly line. Let it do jobs where it actually adds value, not music. That’s where I draw the line. How fucked up do you have to be to destroy an entire culture just to make money? S<\/strong> Exactly. At the same time, I think it’ll sort itself out eventually. Just like TikTok, people are going to get tired of it. Sure, fifty assholes will probably get rich first. But in the end, it’ll become valuable again to know there’s a real person behind the music and a real person performing on stage.<\/p>\n

AB<\/strong> I really hope so. That’s something you kind of have to believe, otherwise you’ll lose your mind. Leaving AI aside for a second, what makes someone a really great rapper to you?<\/p>\n

S<\/strong> That’s hard. Honestly, this is such a generic answer, but… vibes. I don’t care how someone produces or raps as long as it has vibes. Someone can be technically incredible and still not be my thing. For me, music has to dare to do something. If you’re just copying the same formula as everyone else, that’s lame. The job is to say something people can actually feel, with confidence, in your own flow, in your own way. And honestly, maybe three percent of the people making music right now actually do that.<\/p>\n

AB<\/strong> When people listen to your music thirty years from now, what do you hope they’ll learn about you?<\/p>\n

S<\/strong> It would mean the most to me if people saw the courage behind the choices I made, even if they don’t think the music sounds fresh anymore. I’d love it if they could understand who I was and the world the music came from just by listening. If they said, Damn, he really had the guts to do that back then. To say that back then.<\/em> That’s what I’m proudest of. I don’t really think about whether my music will still matter in sixty years. Sure, that’d be amazing, but you can’t plan for timelessness. It only becomes timeless because of the time it came from. Some artists last because of their music, some because of who they are, and some because of both.<\/p>\n

AB<\/strong> We’ve actually made it to the last question. What’s the line of your life?<\/p>\n

S<\/strong> Honestly, I still think the opening line from Diamantstein<\/em> really holds up: “Yeah, sex is cool, but why did my parents have to have it?” (laughs). Every time I perform that song live, I think, yeah… that’s a solid line. It has just the right amount of everything. It’s sexy, but also kind of depressing and funny at the same time.
