You’ve probably never thought twice about sending a private message. Whether it’s an email, a photo, or a quick DM, most of us simply assume those conversations stay private. For anyone who missed it: On 9 July, the European Parliament voted to extend a temporary rule that lets companies like Google, Meta, and Microsoft voluntarily scan unencrypted messages and images for child sexual abuse material. If something suspicious is found, it can be reported to the authorities. So far, it sounds pretty good. Companies are not forced to do anything. Child sexual abusers will face more consequences. But unfortunately, it’s not that simple. Because the discussion that has circulated across the internet in recent weeks is not really about whether children should be protected. Obviously, they should. Nobody would argue against that. The question people are asking is more about whether scanning millions of private messages is the right way to do it. People who share child sexual abuse material often use encrypted services or other hidden networks anyway, so they’ll likely keep finding ways around the system. Meanwhile, millions of ordinary users have their private communication scanned, even though they’ve done nothing wrong. And we have to look at the facts. Because even the European Commission’s own findings say there’s only limited evidence that large-scale scanning is highly effective. Germany’s Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) has reported, for example, that many of the alerts generated by these systems don’t lead to criminal cases. So, if the results are limited, is giving up a part of everyone’s digital privacy really worth it? It may be right in a limited way. But eventually, we have to ask ourselves where all of this could lead. Right now, apps like WhatsApp and Signal aren’t affected because they’re end-to-end encrypted. Future plans, on the other hand, often called Chat Control 2.0, could be broader. But in the end, we know it\u2019s neither a debate about technology nor is it a debate about choosing between protecting children and protecting everyone\u2019s right to privacy.
