It determines which comfort shows we watch over and over again, and which songs we love listening to while working out or pre-drinking. It’s hidden in the way we dress, the way we talk. We learn about it as a literary device in school, through poems like William Blake’s The Tyger. We learn to analyse it. And we learn to overlook it. There’s that one fashion trend you find absolutely hideous the first time you see it, a trend you just can’t wrap your head around. Maison Margiela’s Tabis, for example. Shoulder pads. Skinny jeans. Oversized hair clips on a blouse. Your first thought: “There’s no way I’d ever wear that.” A year later, you’re the one walking around in Tabis, not even necessarily because you want to be part of it. No, it’s because you’ve seen these hoof shaped shoes, originally inspired by Japanese workers’ footwear, again and again and again and again and again over the months, until you found them unbelievably beautiful yourself.

That’s obviously a pretty harmless example. Things get a bit trickier with entertainment formats, though. Here, the repetition starts with how we look at things, and eventually ends up bleeding into what we consider normal. So, it’s probably worth having a closer look at it for once. What actually happens to us when we watch trash TV for weeks, maybe even years? Watching people scream at each other week after week. People who are jealous. Men who assume they can get away with anything. Women who often let the men get away with it too. Relationship dynamics like the ones you’d see with Alex Petrovic or Brenda Brinkmann, the kind a couples therapist and a TV host alike would probably both call deeply toxic. Do we eventually start walking in those shoes ourselves? Because if watching something repeatedly is enough to suddenly make a fashion trend look beautiful, what does it do to our understanding of normality, of relationships, of what counts as acceptable behaviour? Naturally, this isn’t even the first time someone has asked this question about humanity. What happens when you listen to a lot of violent rap? What does it do to a person to play a video game like Halo or Assassin’s Creed for eight hours a day? But what feels different this year, compared to a question a parent might ask themselves out of concern for their child’s upbringing, is the growing and uncontrollable intensity of the outlets themselves. We’re bombarded with bad news, violence and injustice, with criticism, hate comments, opinions. All of it feels like people in 2026 are exposed to a flood that simply can’t be handled in a natural, healthy way anymore. Essentially, we probably process more information in a single day than previous generations could have ever imagined.

To actually understand what this flood of information, and the inevitable flood of repetition that comes with it, does to the human psyche, we have to look to the past, as always. Because as I said, this question isn’t new. Plato and Aristotle already had a fascinating discussion about this in Ancient Greece. The short version, without getting too philosophical, is that Aristotle believed watching theatre plays, the equivalent of our beloved trash TV formats, was a form of emotional release. By watching, you feel the same emotions, pain, grief, anger, jealousy, but you’re able to let them go instead of ever acting them out. Plato, on the other hand, essentially argues the opposite. In his view, you become what you consume. If all you see is that same pain, grief, anger, jealousy, you internalise those emotions yourself and end up acting them out.

Both sound logical. But science today actually sides more with Plato. Based on his idea, the so-called cultivation theory developed in the 1960s. Just like the Plato and Aristotle debate, it centres on the influence of entertainment: the more emotionally you live inside a certain reality, the more you make that reality your own. Because repetition is what slowly, gradually, again and again and again, rewrites your subconscious without you noticing.

The consequence: heavy TV consumers tend to develop similar worldviews, regardless of their social class, region, or political beliefs. This is because repeated exposure to certain values, facts and emotions homogenises our understanding of the world.

https://www.sleek-mag.com/de/article/you-become-what-you-consume/whatsapp-image-2026-07-29-at-18-29-22/
"1536x1536":"https://www.sleek-mag.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/WhatsApp-Image-2026-07-29-at-18.29.22-1536x1016.jpeg","1536x1536-width":1536,"1536x1536-height":1016,"2048x2048":"https://www.sleek-mag.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/WhatsApp-Image-2026-07-29-at-18.29.22.jpeg","2048x2048-width":1600,"2048x2048-height":1058
https://www.sleek-mag.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/WhatsApp-Image-2026-07-29-at-18.29.22-18x12.jpeg

In a way, that doesn’t sound so bad at first, just imagine if it meant good values were being instilled. But it’s not quite that simple.

Assuming a normal, neutral user, the algorithm quickly ends up bringing you into new online bubbles every day, offering you new suggestions tailored to your interests. So, the homogenisation no longer happens on a societal level like it did with classic trash TV, it happens inside thousands of small, self-contained realities all at once. Of a reality check, if you actively step outside your own bubble, and of encountering completely new opinions, cultures, attitudes, beauty standards, trends and relationship dynamics. This is obviously a simplified take, there’s of course much more to the topic of social media’s influence. But broken down, it’s also a tool that, used correctly, allows us to break out of the wheel of endless repetition entirely, rather than just landing in a smaller version of the same wheel.

But to also look at the other side of the mirror, it has to be said: not all repetition is bad. Sometimes, repetition creates acceptance. People from the LGBTQIA+ community are showing themselves in public more and more these days. Because of that, it becomes a topic that gets normalised more and more and more and more. And you could even argue that if women hadn’t fought for their rights again and again and again and again, they might still not be allowed to vote today. Looking at the attack on CSD in Berlin, or the rise of right-wing movements around the world, it becomes clear how important it still is that we keep working to normalise the presence and experiences of marginalised communities. And if repetition can help us do that, then let’s use it.

What this all comes down to is this: sometimes it’s just a fashion trend, sometimes it’s destructive, and yet sometimes you should put on the hoof shoes yourself too. Repetition shapes us more than we realise. And becoming aware of it is the first step towards handling it in a positive way, protecting yourself and your mental health, and maybe even making the world a better place someday.
