The crime scene is as follows: the Martin-Gropius-Bau, jade handcuffs, red lantern security cameras. All signs of an artist’s ongoing struggle with the Chinese government, a struggle that has inspired as much as it has hindered him.<\/p>\n

The internationally renowned artist and dissident Ai Weiwei’s latest exhibition “Evidence” at the Martin-Gropius-Bau opened yesterday. It is his largest show to date, with some works that have never been exhibited in Germany, and others that have been created especially for the show. The Martin-Gropius-Bau’s Lichthof will play host to his new work “Stools”, portraying a centuries-old interior aesthetic of rural China. In “Han Dynasty Vases with Auto Paint”, Ai simultaneously preserves and destroys the ancient artefacts, with visual language that focuses, as always, on the old and new aspects of his home country.<\/p>\n
