Somehow, Germany learned to love its poets dead. We name streets after them, turn their houses into museums, and make generations of students analyse their words sentence by sentence. This Friday, August 28, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, one of the defining writers of German literature and a central figure of Weimar Classicism, would have turned 277. Germany clearly still takes its “Dichter und Denker” (German for \u201cpoets and thinkers\u201d) seriously. So what would happen if we allowed ourselves to look for the next ones while they are still around?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Christopher Nolan\u2019s new film, The Odyssey<\/em> (2026), offers an unexpectedly good place to search for an answer. His adaptation of Homer\u2019s almost 2,700-year-old epic opens with Travis Scott as a bard, the first figure and voice we see on screen. What could easily be dismissed as casting stunt actually follows a simple logic. Homer\u2019s stories existed as oral poetry long before they became books, passed from one generation to the next by people who knew how to make others listen. The comparison becomes even more interesting once we remember what poetry was actually for before we turned it into something to annotate in class. Homeric singers preserved stories, carried knowledge across generations and gave people a language for courage, loyalty, grief and honour. Entertainment was part of it, but so was collective memory. By Goethe\u2019s time, society had changed and poetry had changed with it, placing greater emphasis on the individual self, desire, morality and social convention. Countless literary movements came before, between and after them, responding to political shifts, technological progress and new ways of living. Frankly, Homer and Goethe are only two stops in that much longer history. What connects them is less a particular form of poetry and more the fact that language has never stood still.<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, poetry regularly gets declared dead, especially in conversations about younger generations supposedly losing their ability to read, concentrate, or connect with literature. It is an easy conclusion to reach when poetry is understood mainly as the thing left sitting untouched on a bookshelf. Yet a teenager who would never voluntarily pick up a poetry anthology might know fifty songs word for word, which makes it hard to argue that the relationship to lyrical language has disappeared. We have, after all, already accepted that shift on literature\u2019s biggest stage. Remember when Bob Dylan won the Nobel Prize in Literature? Exactly. In 2016, the Swedish Academy awarded the songwriter for creating \u201cnew poetic expressions\u201d within the American song tradition. The idea that lyrics can have literary value should hardly shock us anymore. Things only become more complicated once we start asking whose lyrics deserve that recognition.<\/p>\n

Germany faced exactly that conversation after Netflix’s Babo \u2013 Die Haftbefehl-Story<\/em> (2025), when students in Offenbach argued that German rapper Aykut Anhan, better known as Haftbefehl, should be discussed in school, calling him part of their \u201ccultural DNA\u201d. Putting Haftbefehl next to Goethe was not really the point, but rather giving a platform to topics like migration, class, drugs and violence that resonate with the realities of many young people outside the classroom. Instead of seeing that familiarity as a reason to engage with his work critically, the Hessian Ministry of Education firmly rejected the idea, arguing that his work was sexist and antisemitic, glorified drugs, and ultimately made him unsuitable as a role model. Considering that Faust would hardly pass a morality check either, this seems like a curious standard to apply to literature.<\/p>\n

More interesting than the argument over one rapper is what the debate exposed. For centuries, education, money, gender, and social position shaped whose experiences entered the literary canon. Music loosened some of those barriers, while rap pushed further by turning poverty, migration, racism, and exclusion into art without translating those realities into the vocabulary of an educated elite. Women, historically more likely to appear in celebrated literature than to be known as writers, now occupy some of the largest platforms for lyrical storytelling themselves. Once we recognise ourselves in someone else\u2019s words, they rarely stay just theirs. What we hear and repeat eventually finds its way into how we speak, think, and understand ourselves. Expressions slip from songs into conversations, metaphors stick around long after we have forgotten where we first heard them, and sometimes a lyric manages to name a feeling we could not quite articulate ourselves. Somebody else writes about heartbreak, and suddenly ours becomes easier to explain because private frustration gains political meaning once we recognise that others share it. Even loneliness feels different when we hear our own thoughts coming from somebody else. This is where language becomes powerful, because rather than simply documenting how we live, it shapes how we make sense of living.<\/p>\n

That is hardly a new job. While Homeric singers decided which stories would be carried into the future, writers like the young Goethe did more than put the emotions of their present into words. As part of the epoch Sturm und Drang, they helped shape a cultural movement that longed for more freedom, individuality and feeling, challenging the rules and rationalism that had dominated before. What has changed today is how quickly and widely that exchange can happen. A lyric written in a studio can reach millions within hours, crossing countries, classes, and generations without requiring a salon, a literary circle, or even a page. Whoever finds the phrase that sticks can influence how an experience is understood. That makes the question of whose words we take seriously a powerful one. Who gets heard? Whose vocabulary is considered educated? Whose stories are worth studying? The influence of a lyric therefore goes beyond making us feel understood. At its best, it turns something deeply personal into shared vocabulary and experience, giving others a way to speak about their own grief, desire, anger, or confusion. Literature, poetry, and music cannot cure the loneliness, something we seem to have plenty of these days, but they can turn individual perspectives into something collective. Once an emotion finds words that resonate beyond the person who wrote them, those words can outlive their moment. Someone separated from us by class, gender, geography or thousands of years can describe an experience and somehow make it familiar. It is part of the reason Homer can still reach us almost three millennia later.<\/p>\n

Which brings us back to the man of the hour. Goethe still matters because his writing survived the world it was written for, not because great poetry somehow ended with him. Celebrating his 277th birthday should therefore mean more than preserving the past; it should make us curious about who is finding the language for our own time. Our next “Dichter und Denker” are already here: on stages, in our headphones, perhaps scribbling into their notes app on the subway.
