Today in Venice, something begins that has become rare in our culture: an event that has not yet taken place. With Ink, Danny Boyle\u2019s adaptation of the stage play of the same name, the 83rd edition of the Venice Film Festival opens at the Lido. No one outside a small circle has seen the film so far, and when the lights go down in the Palazzo del Cinema, it is not just a screening that begins. For a moment, the public existence of a work begins.<\/p>\n

Venice, more than almost any other festival, lives by the principle of the world premiere. At first, that sounds like a formality of festival operations, yet it contains an idea that today seems almost radical: that something needs a specific place and a specific moment in order to become an event.<\/p>\n

What the Feed Cannot Do<\/strong><\/p>\n

The feed knows no premiere. In truth, it does not even know beginning and end, because it is always already there and keeps on going.<\/p>\n

That is its great strength. Never before has so much culture been so quickly, so easily and so naturally available. A film, a song, an image, an interview, a clip: everything can appear at any time, be shared, saved, repeated and forwarded. Availability has become one of the great cultural achievements of our time, but it comes at a price.<\/p>\n

Whatever is always available need not wait for a particular moment, and what need not wait for any moment loses part of its ability to create such a moment in the first place. This is precisely where the logic of the Mostra begins.<\/p>\n

A film is shown on a particular evening in a particular auditorium to an audience that has come to Venice especially for it. Of course, the same film can later be seen in Berlin, Paris or New York, in the cinema or one day at home. The work is reproducible. The moment of its first public reception is not. This distinction is crucial because a festival does not merely produce films as objects of contemplation. It creates situations: anticipation before the screening, concentration during it and conversations afterwards. People see the same thing at the same time and then argue about what they have seen.<\/p>\n

The algorithm organises culture differently, generating millions of parallel presents that are perfectly tailored to the individual, while the festival creates common ground for a few hours. Perhaps that is precisely the real scarcity today. The Freedom of Limitation<\/strong><\/p>\n

There is also a curious paradox in this. At home, we have almost complete control over a film. We can pause, rewind, fast-forward, turn on subtitles, reply to messages or watch something else after twenty minutes. That feels like freedom and, technically, it is. In the cinema, however, we voluntarily give up almost all these options. The lights go out, the phone disappears and the film sets the pace. We cannot speed up a scene because it bores us, nor go back because we were inattentive for a moment. For two hours, we accept the other\u2019s time, and it may be precisely from this that another form of freedom emerges.<\/p>\n

Cinema gives us less control over the work and perhaps precisely for that reason, more control over our attention.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The freedom of the feed, by contrast, is contradictory. We can keep scrolling at any time, yet that very possibility becomes a permanent invitation to do so. Hardly has something caught our attention when the next thing is already waiting, not because the previous thing has been completed, but because the machine knows no end.<\/p>\n

Cinema sets a limit to this endlessness through beginning, duration and end. A Shared Present<\/strong><\/p>\n

That is why a festival like Venice is more than just a particularly glamorous place where films are shown for the first time. It is a machine for producing a shared present, which also explains why the political conflicts of the time become so immediately visible on the Lido.<\/p>\n

This year too, debates about the war in Gaza and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict are accompanying the festival even before its opening. This is not because a film festival necessarily has better answers to political questions, but because, for a few days, it creates a public sphere that cannot be fully personalised.<\/p>\n

Anyone sitting in a cinema cannot curate their audience. They sit next to people who will love the film and others who will despise it, alongside journalists, directors, actors, producers, critics and guests. They do not have the same feed and probably do not inhabit the same political reality, but for two hours, they see the same thing.<\/p>\n

That may sound banal, yet in an increasingly fragmented public sphere, it is not. The feed shows us the world an algorithm believes we want to see, while a festival, at least occasionally, confronts us with a world we did not choose for ourselves. What Remains When the Curtain Falls<\/strong><\/p>\n

On 12 September, the Mostra ends, and many of the films shown there will then remain unavailable to the general public for weeks or months. Some will not reach cinemas until awards season, while others will arrive even later.<\/p>\n

By the standards of the platform economy, this seems almost absurd: why generate attention around a work only to withdraw it again from immediate availability? Perhaps, however, that is precisely the point.<\/p>\n

Since 1932, Venice has brought people together so that they can look at a screen together. The technology surrounding this ritual has changed completely, while its actual idea has changed remarkably little, which may be precisely why it is becoming interesting again.<\/p>\n

The real scarcity of our present is no longer found in images, films or stories. It lies in the moments when we are willing not to exchange our attention straight away for the next possibility. Venice therefore does not defend the past of cinema, but something that is only just becoming precious again: limitation.<\/p>\n

One place, one time, one film, and the freedom not to have to see anything else for two hours.<\/p>\n

Venice does not defend the artificial scarcity of culture, nor does it nostalgically defend a world before streaming, TikTok and Instagram. That world is not coming back, and it does not need to.
