The term \u2018soft power\u2019 demands a second, closer look. Traditionally, it describes a strategy of expanding influence, a form of cultural export that operates without the coercive force this world has seen too many times, yet still follows political agendas. It works in two directions: shaping how a culture presents itself outwardly and how it understands itself from within, creating identification and persuasion dressed in spectacle. But what happens when we understand \u2018soft\u2019 as collective, and \u2018power\u2019 as something shared rather than a tool of representation, neither asserting nor convincing, but inviting? Perhaps then the status quo can be turned on its head, making room not for one idea, but for a multitude of possibilities that allow us to imagine and rehearse different modes. Soft Power<\/em> festival creates such a space and turns it into an attitude, bringing exhibitions, performances, music, conversations and shared meals together in one open Gesamtkunstwerk<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n NISHA MERIT<\/strong> Anahita, you have given life to Soft Power. What does this term mean? It is often used in political contexts, but also describes a dichotomy that might suggest more tension than unity.<\/p>\n ANAHITA SADIGHI<\/strong> Soft power refers to the ability to exert influence through culture, creativity, values and persuasion rather than economic pressure. Soft Power is an attitude: transformative, without being dominating.<\/p>\n PIERRE JORGE GONZALEZ<\/strong> I think it\u2019s soft when it comes from a truly democratised society, when a lot of people share this power. It\u2019s not pyramidal and doesn\u2019t come down to one person, who is usually a man. In France, we have this saying, contre-pouvoir, a kind of counter-power. It\u2019s an active space behind power, a vigilance that checks the forces in place.<\/p>\n AS<\/strong> Within Soft Power, we understand art as a collec- tive practice. That\u2019s why I think the term is worth reclaiming: not as an instrument of state power, but as a collective, creative practice. Berlin remains powerful because of its cultural landscape and creative depth. What interests me is reactivating and redirecting that potential \u2014 towards encounter, dialogue and resonance, on a larger scale.<\/p>\n NM<\/strong> Pierre Jorge, as a designer whose practice is in architecture, scenography and lighting, how does the concept of soft power translate into space and material?<\/p>\n PJG<\/strong> We have a way of working that tries to be honest and clear. Many people call it minimal, but it\u2019s not really about minimalism or restraint. It\u2019s about finding the right resources for each project and achieving as much as pos- sible with as little as possible. Instead of building some- thing complex, we put things together simply and reduce the amount of intervention. Light is important because it creates materiality. It shapes how you perceive a space. At Haus der Visiona\u0308re, the space is already beautiful, so covering it wouldn\u2019t make sense. The approach is to work with it, using transparent or translucent materials. It\u2019s an industrial building where natural light comes from the north, so there is no direct sunlight, which is ideal for art. What you\u2019re proposing seems to be about remixing things. It\u2019s not new, but I think we\u2019ve forgotten that we can do it<\/p>\n AS<\/strong> Exactly, and it\u2019s in that mixing that something genuinely new emerges. I think what we\u2019re responding to is a longing for the healing power of art and culture, in every sense: physical, mental, spiritual. Especially now, Soft Power is a key to connection rather than division.<\/p>\n NM<\/strong> The programme is interdisciplinary: art, music, talks and radio. Radio is curated, thought through and narrated, rather than governed by an algorithm. Community feels different here from today\u2019s social media, which is everywhere but never really anywhere. Tell me more about this extension of the space and the role this type of community-making plays.<\/p>\n AS<\/strong> I\u2019m a big sucker for radio. I think we need to rethink radio as a curatorial instrument. Not everybody can access the festival in person, but they can still tune in. It\u2019s developed with Refuge Worldwide, bringing together international voices, artistic contributions, conversations and musical positions. Soft Power is planned to become something continuous. How do you envision it developing?<\/p>\n AS<\/strong> The idea is for it to become a biennial festival, so the next edition will take place in 2028. From the start, it was clear that this isn\u2019t a one-off event, but something that develops over time \u2013 its curatorial, spatial and conceptual language evolving with each edition. Community has time to develop, edition after edition, and that long-term collaboration gives it real weight. We have more than 100 artists from visual art and music, alongside thinkers and curators, for this first edition \u2013 forming the broader Soft Power family.<\/p>\n NM<\/strong> And why not think utopian?<\/p>\n PJG<\/strong> I love that.
