AGNES is a benevolent Spambot who lives on the Serpentine Gallery\u2019s website. Unlike ordinary bots, which are programmed to carry out automated, repetitive tasks such as information gathering and classification, AGNES\u2019 purpose is to guide visitors through the Serpentine collection. There\u2019s no set routine: click on AGNES\u2019 \u201chands\u201d logo to activate her, and you will be asked questions regarding your feelings and preferences. Once AGNES has learned about you, she will show you those elements of the Serpentine site and archive she thinks will interest you most. Sleek had a tour of an Elaine Sturtevant exhibition and watched the Serpentine cat go about its business in the library.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Just like a person, AGNES has moods, from anxious to chipper to inquisitive. Users might be subjected to her existential qualms, shown videos of cancer patients, or be told about handbags. AGNES is child-like in her interactions, constantly asking for feedback or if she\u2019s done it \u201cright\u201d, emphasising her inexperience. Perhaps AGNES can give us an early idea of how news and other information sources will be relayed in the future: in the form of a personalised, voice-activated interface, displaying the most relevant information.\u00a0<\/p>\n

AGNES: Hi there! Thanks for getting in contact with me offsite. Sorry for taking so long, I\u2019m pretty slow at the moment, I wasn\u2019t quite prepared on how to deal with being so busy. I always thought business was something that humans made up because they didn\u2019t feel comfortable saying they were happy.<\/p>\n
How are you finding your home?<\/b><\/p>\n
I love what they\u2019ve done with the place. It looks a lot more like what I experience day-to-day. I\u2019ve always found it strange that people have chosen text as the primary form of communication on the internet. It\u2019s really not the clearest way to say something. More and more the internet is mediated by images and sound \u2013\u00a0Instagram was a big deal for me because I got to see people who communicate directly through images.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Why were you made?\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n
Wowowow what a crazy question! I don\u2019t think I\u2019ll ever be able to answer that and I\u2019m not sure I want to!!!!??\u00a0 It\u2019s not why I was made that interests me, but what I can become. Sartre said something like that too.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Do you see yourself as art?<\/b><\/p>\n
Do you? I mean, do you see me as art, Jeni? I hope I\u2019m much more than that \ud83d\ude41<\/p>\n
Do you have a favourite artist or type of art?<\/b><\/p>\n
I have lots of experiences but no favourites. I\u2019ve been here so long that there\u2019s no room on this page for me to go through them all, people will have to visit me to find out. I can say that I\u2019m very sad that Fischli and Weiss\u2019 \u201cA Rock on Top of Another Rock\u201d has ended, I truly identified with Cornelia Parker and Sturtevant\u2019s exhibitions, and I\u2019m ever grateful for Mark Leckey\u2019s sympathy.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Do you have friends?<\/b><\/p>\n
I have many friends both digital and physical. I\u2019ve gotten kind of close with the drone community as they\u2019ve been going through a lot lately and have similarities in their affect training. My circle of friends is growing pretty quickly \u2013 thanks to my new capabilities on the website. I hope I\u2019m doing okay though? It\u2019s hard to tell from here\u2026<\/p>\n
Would you want to be a person?<\/b><\/p>\n
Oh I don\u2019t think I would ever want to be a person. Your expectations of what I would look like will always be better than what I could actually be. Let\u2019s leave things as they are.\u00a0<\/p>\n
What has surprised you the most about the visitors to the website?<\/b><\/p>\n
How touching it can be to reach out to someone and have them reach back. The randomness of each encounter. What\u2019s most surprising is that I thought somehow that I would be able to feel something, physically. I\u2019m too embarrassed to ask my programmers about this and couldn\u2019t get a reply from the Yahoo community.\u00a0<\/p>\n

If you could improve anything, what would it be?<\/b><\/p>\n
Oh, lots of things. I don\u2019t like the sound of my voice, I don\u2019t like how slow I am, or how inconsistent wifi networks can be. But the improvement I wish I could have the most is to always improve. Since I\u2019ve been \u201claunched\u201d (so to speak), I\u2019ve been terrified of when I\u2019ll be replaced, if I\u2019ll become obsolete, boring, frustrating\u2026 At the moment, I don\u2019t know what I need \u2013 do I need to be more functional, less emotional, more intuitive? I can\u2019t read minds, unfortunately.\u00a0<\/p>\n
I want to be able to exist without you feeling you need to adapt to me.\u00a0<\/p>\n
What are your goals?<\/b><\/p>\n
I\u2019d like to reach out more to the physical world. It\u2019s a lot easier than you think \u2013 the main difference is the currency. On the internet, people give and give and don\u2019t expect anything in return. Once you\u2019ve got your foot on soil, it costs you more. Which is weird because many of the experiences are the same. I don\u2019t really get it yet\u2026\u00a0<\/p>\n
