The Danish performance artist deals with notions of ritual and group mentality in his works, which have included the artist himself playing different stereotypes of an artist (as in “Masculine demeanor as a consequence of social power relations between artist and audience” (2013) and directing participants, like extras, in a music video (“Opening” (2013)). We spoke to the artist before Berlin Art Week about the differences between showing a performance at an art fair and and an institution and what being a white heterosexual male has to do with his art.

Sleek: Tell us about the work you created for “Vertigo of Reality”.

Christian Falsnaes: I was invited for the exhibition because I work very strongly with the interaction between the audience and the artist -you could say that I work with the audience as a material. The work I present is very much a situation that viewers can participate in. The piece was shown for the first time at Art Basel – but will now be shown for the first time in an institutional exhibition. The work is called “Justified Beliefs” and consists of five headphones with synchronized, but different, audio tracks. Each audio track is a series of ongoing instructions to the one wearing the headphones. When the viewer puts on one of the headphones, immediately a voice tells you what to do. Since the five headphones are synchronized, they correspond to each other in a way that a choreography occurs when people follow the instructions. I have also hired two people who are in the installation all the time. So there are always people that you can engage with.

So you showed it first at Art Basel…. how do you think it would be different at the institution?

I was very surprised with how well it went in Basel because art fairs in general are a really difficult context for showing art. This work requires intense interaction so you need to invest some of your time and yourself into the piece to make it work. I was surprised by how many people actually interacted with the piece and to which degree.

I can imagine that it will work even better in an institutional setting where people have time to really experience the works. Because of the theme of the exhibition, people already go there with certain expectations and therefore might be more prepared to invest themselves in the works as well.

It’s interesting because you’re not in the piece while in a lot of your other pieces, you are very present. Is there a reason for that?

Yes, I have actually been thinking a lot about trying to take myself and my personality out of the work. The works I did where I performed and controlled the situation had developed a specific language to create this kind of situation. I noticed that the audience, very often, think that the work is all about me and how I behave. That is actually not what interests me. I’m more interested in the idea of how certain rituals are played out and how they influence certain behaviour. So I’ve been thinking about situations where I would not need to be present myself to open up the pieces a little bit. This is one of the approaches that I’ve tried.

It’s really funny because actually my final question was: Your work has becoming so personal, and as you develop yourself as an artist and become more famous for doing this, you as an authority have actually become somehow real.

Exactly and also people then come to my shows with specific expectations and so on.

Your work often deals with the idea of performing masculinity, especially the white heterosexual masculinity.

It is a very complex theme and my relationship with the theme is also very complex because I’m trying to analyze something about myself. I have been very inspired and influenced by a feminist approach especially in performance art where female artists, but also queer artists, have used performance as a way to investigate their own identities and to clarify specific norms and behaviour. As a white heterosexual male artist, it seems like my identity is not an issue at all. If you’re a white heterosexual artist then you’re just an artist, but if you’re a woman then you’re a female artist.

I also noticed that I tend to use specific authoritative gestures and that are strongly connected to my identity as a white male, but then instead of being afraid of it and think that it’s a problematic thing, I try to go even deeper and explore it further.

It seems like the humour in your work is an important part of it. How do you feel you managed to keep that humour?

That’s a good question because that is not something that I necessarily try to do. I think if I would try to do it then it would probably get lost. It’s not because I try to be funny, it probably just seems funny because the situations that occur in my performances are absurd.

The internet is obviously important for documentation of your work. How differently do you approach the work and its existence on the internet?

I have been using the internet very deliberately to spread my works. Especially videos can have an interesting online life and I have been working a lot with the relation between performance and video and often use the situation of a performance as a production facility for a video work. I don’t see the video as a documentation though, I see it as an independent work. I work together with a specific camerateam and actually create scripts for my videos before I do a performance, so I know exactly what shots I need. I often incorporate the video recording into the performance as well.

When I started doing performances, I saw other performance artists who just put a camera on a tripod somewhere, where documentation is this thing that’s happening on the side. But then I thought why even then a video if the video itself is not interesting to watch? So I started to work with the language of video and what you can achieve with it. I am very conscious about what videos I put online and what I want it to achieve by having them on the internet.

“Schwindel der Wirklichkeit” (“Vertigo of Reality”) is on at Akademie der Künste, Berlin from September 17 to December 14, 2014

Christian Falsnaes is also showing “Performance Works” at PSM Gallery, Berlin from September 18 to November 1, 2014

Read more art reviews and interviews in our Showroom section

Check out Sleek 43, Youth/Truth, for a review of Vertigo of Reality

Christian Falsnaes, Justified Beliefs, Performance, 2014 © Christian Falsnaes / courtesy of PSM, Berlin With a live performance at the opening of the exhibition “Vertigo of Reality”, tonight, at the Akademie der Kunste, as well as a solo show opening at PSM, Christian Falsnaes is having a busy Berlin Art Week.
