Vienna, this week, presented itself as credible candidate\u00a0with Viennafair, the Parallel side event and the &#8220;curated by_vienna&#8221; programme of\u00a0exhibitions presenting exciting art from Austria, Eastern Europe and beyond. There\u00a0are plenty of dilapidated art venues to\u00a0discover, architectural bars (the Loos Bar,\u00a0designed by Adolf Loos for example) and a wealth of cultural\u00a0heritage to gawp at. Meanwhile, the food is delicious, and\u00a0there are plenty of men in\u00a0Lederhosen to admire \u2013 the Viennese take their traditional dress very seriously\u00a0indeed.<\/p>\n<p>Viennafair traditionally functions as\u00a0gateway to Eastern Europe, with participating galleries hailing from Russia,\u00a0Hungary, the Czech Republic and Serbia, among\u00a0others. A large-scale\u00a0installation of arrestingly pink mattresses in the middle of the site, courtesy\u00a0of the curated by_vienna team gave respite, although at the time that\u00a0Sleek stopped\u00a0by, no wearied collectors were having a quick snooze. Galleries were showing\u00a0both established (at Georg Kargl Fine Arts, Guy Pieters and Triumph\u00a0Gallery\u00a0among others) and emerging positions, but generally, the art shown was in the\u00a0affordable price ranges: below \u20ac50,000 in most, and below \u20ac10,000 in\u00a0emerging cases.<\/p>\n<p>Viennafair is quite regional: the 99\u00a0participating galleries are mainly Austrian (33), with 41 originating from the Central\u00a0and Eastern European area, but most\u00a0international participants hail from\u00a0Germany\/Berlin, such as KOW, Crone and Zak Branicka (who won a prize for their\u00a0presentation of Natalia Stachon and Szymon\u00a0Kobarz. The atmosphere is buzzy, but\u00a0most galleries, unsure of their reception, have packed a mixed bag of wares,\u00a0with installation jostling with photograms, works\u00a0on paper and conceptual art, as Bea Herhold de Sousa of London gallery the Agency remarked. This translated\u00a0to Nigerian photography, Italian sculpture (a very BDSM harness piece by\u00a0Simona Brinkmann, priced at \u20ac10,000) and British Pop\u00a0Art sharing a booth. However, this approach seems to have hit a nerve: Artnet reported &#8220;galloping&#8221; sales, and\u00a0certainly the opening was abuzz with collectors, gallerists dancing from\u00a0client to client.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Parallel fair, in a dilapidated former\u00a0tax office in an outlying district was the secondary fair, with project spaces,\u00a0independent curators and young galleries from\u00a0Vienna, Graz and beyond\u00a0participating. It functions as a Litmus test for the health of the younger art\u00a0scene in these regions, and given the range of works on view,\u00a0much rests on the\u00a0curatorial efforts of the spaces and galleries involved. Again, there is much\u00a0of Jerry Saltz\u2019s Neo-Mannerist installation and Minimalist-inspired\u00a0sculpture\u00a0on view, and much &#8220;Zombie Formalist&#8221; abstraction. But here and there lurk more\u00a0interesting efforts, such as in the room curated by Cornelis van Almsick,\u00a0which\u00a0united the artists Rendl-Wittmann and Buschmann in a site-specific installation\u00a0of painting and photography.<\/p>\n<p class=\"size--small\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16845\" alt=\"Jan Fabre, Brein met engelenvleugels, 2011. Wax, 24 x 26 x 30 cm, courtesy of Guy Pieters Gallery.<\/p>\n<p>Most fairs now boast a talks programme as\u00a0well as a special visitors&#8217; schedule: this was also a feature at Viennafair. Beatriz\u00a0Colomina, a Stanford professor of\u00a0architecture, is the curator-in-chief for the\u00a020 participating galleries of curated by_vienna, and in a talk on Thursday introduced\u00a0her central concept of the bed as a new\u00a0place engulfed by the neoliberal\u00a0mandate to produce, produce, produce.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Touring the participating galleries a day\u00a0later, after a late night at the Spike party (at which Berlin&#8217;s favourite\u00a0Canadian, Jeremy Shaw, DJed), and much J\u00e4germeister\u00a0flowed, Sleek was struck by\u00a0the sheer tenacity and ambition of the participating galleries. They had each\u00a0selected a curator, ranging from former Museum Ludwig\u00a0director Philipp Kaiser at\u00a0N\u00e4chst St Stephan via the well-known Vienna professor and Texte zur Kunst writer\u00a0Sabeth Buchmann at Gallerie Mezzanin to Carson Chan,\u00a0all riffing on Colomina\u2019s\u00a0central concept. Her main source was a 2012 quote from the WSJ, stating that\u00a080% of New York professionals regularly work from bed.\u00a0Chan\u2019s interpretation\u00a0was quite literal literal, as he showed Rafman\u2019s piece &#8220;Still Life (betamale)&#8221; (2014),\u00a0with its lingering close-ups of game-caves and online sexual\u00a0obsession, as well\u00a0as an early Shaw multi-channel video piece on dreams.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A sweet piece by Francis Alys showed slides\u00a0of dogs, people, anything sleeping. Several beds, one an image done over by\u00a0Felix Gonzales-Torres, made an appearance. John Kelsey at Mayer Kainer turns\u00a0out to be rather devoid of effort, while elsewhere there was much empty\u00a0formalism. All in all, however, the galleries,\u00a0which are centred on two close\u00a0hubs with a few outliers, presented a very strong programme.
