In &#8220;We Want More&#8221; curator Diane <span id=\":1wc.1\" class=\"\" tabindex=\"-1\" data-g-spell-status=\"2\">Smyth<\/span> was keen to start from the turn of the century, presenting images that examine the world of music photography in recent years. Set over two floors, the exhibition ranges from artfully staged album covers, magazine exclusives, new technologies to documentary style-footage; and we witness the focus shifting from the stars themselves to the effect of their music.<\/p>\n<p class=\"size--small\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-24033\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sleek-mag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/05_Press-Image-l-WWM-l-Roger-Ballen-Gooi-Rooi-2012.jpg\" alt=\"Gooi Rooi, 2012, photo by Roger Ballen. Courtesy of the artist<\/p>\n<p>Jason Evans presents several enlarged contact sheets from his 2001-08 sessions with <span id=\":1wc.2\" class=\"\" tabindex=\"-1\" data-g-spell-status=\"2\">Radiohead<\/span>. Like a bad stop motion they play out entire scenarios, we see faces morph, limbs fail, there\u2019s an added life and so an added intimacy to the subject. Contact sheets give us what the finished product doesn\u2019t \u2013 the unwanted shots, those images of the artist that are discarded, hidden away. When placed in contrast with the <span id=\":1wc.3\" class=\"\" tabindex=\"-1\" data-g-spell-status=\"2\">photoshopped<\/span> serenity of Lady Gaga\u2019s portraits shot by Inez van Lamsweerde &amp; Vinoodh Matadin, or Roger Ballen\u2019s artfully composed monochrome scenarios for Die <span id=\":1wc.5\" class=\"\" tabindex=\"-1\" data-g-spell-status=\"2\">Antwoord<\/span>, it\u2019s a nice reminder that behind the masks there\u2019s movement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"size--small\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-24032\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sleek-mag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/03_Press-Image-l-WWM-l-Inez-and-Vinoodh-Lady-Gaga-Dope-Artpop-2013.jpg\" alt=\"Lady Gaga \/ Dope - Artpop, 2013, photo by Inez van Lamsweerde &amp; Vinoodh Matadin. Courtesy of the artists<\/p>\n<p>Of course in modern technology this movement itself is exploited, as with Ryan <span id=\":1wc.6\" class=\"\" tabindex=\"-1\" data-g-spell-status=\"2\">Enn<\/span> Hughes\u2019s gif<span id=\":1wc.7\" class=\"\" tabindex=\"-1\" data-g-spell-status=\"2\">s<\/span> of Katy Perry (created from the music video of her song \u201cBirthday\u201d directed by Danny Lockwood and Marc <span id=\":1wc.8\" class=\"\" tabindex=\"-1\" data-g-spell-status=\"2\">Klasfeld<\/span>) which are displayed on <span id=\":1wc.9\" class=\"\" tabindex=\"-1\" data-g-spell-status=\"2\">iPads<\/span>. One of Smyth\u2019s enduring concerns throughout the exhibitions seems to be this division between commissioned and spontaneous work. Many portraits on display show how musicians are able to control the presentation of their image: Ballen\u2019s <span id=\":1wc.10\" class=\"\" tabindex=\"-1\" data-g-spell-status=\"2\">dystopian<\/span> scenes of Die <span id=\":1wc.11\" class=\"\" tabindex=\"-1\" data-g-spell-status=\"2\">Antwoord<\/span> with bodies stuck to <span id=\":1wc.12\" class=\"\" tabindex=\"-1\" data-g-spell-status=\"2\">mit Graffiti beschmiert<\/span> walls and ducks occupying abandoned bathtubs are just as organised as the airbrushed cheekbones of Lady Gaga. Yet just as the amount of control over image-making in the music industry has increased, so too has the amount that is outside control. The work of David Cohen catches performers (including artists such as <span id=\":1wc.13\" class=\"\" tabindex=\"-1\" data-g-spell-status=\"2\">Chaka<\/span> Khan, <span id=\":1wc.14\" class=\"\" tabindex=\"-1\" data-g-spell-status=\"2\">Erykah<\/span> <span id=\":1wc.15\" class=\"\" tabindex=\"-1\" data-g-spell-status=\"2\">Badu<\/span> and Jill Scott) just after their last song before they return to the stage for an encore. The stolen moment shows, as the photographer says, \u201cthe person not being an artist for 10 or 20 seconds\u201d. One figure, \u201cPauli the PSM\u201d, is frozen in time up in the air; he\u2019s the drummer you won\u2019t see, hidden at the back of the stage for Damon <span id=\":1wc.18\" class=\"\" tabindex=\"-1\" data-g-spell-status=\"2\">Albarn<\/span>.
