He often uses literary quotations in his works that don\u2019t immediately relate to the imagery, lending his drawings an ambiguity that is at once challenging and intellectually provocative. Similarly elusive in person, Pettibon does not appreciate being pigeonholed with labels like \u201cpunk rocker\u201d or \u201canarchist\u201d, though he does little to shake these epithets: for this interview during Berlin&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sleek-mag.com\/tag\/gallery-weekend\/\">Gallery Weekend<\/a>, Pettibon showed up an hour late, after an assistant had been sent to pick him up from his hotel room. On arrival, Pettibon had alcohol on his breath. It was noon. But whatever you do, don\u2019t dare call his work \u201cpolitical satire\u201d, at least not when he\u2019s listening. \u201cIt\u2019s not about satire,\u201d he told sleek, \u201cI don\u2019t mind that word, but it\u2019s more real life. I don\u2019t know why journalists need these categories. Who the fuck cares? But what am I going to do, argue with them? It\u2019s tiresome, a fucking waste of time.\u201d<em><strong> <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>sleek<\/strong> <strong>So a work showing Michelle and Barack Obama and George W. Bush snorting cocaine is not meant as political satire? [Part of the text in this drawing reads: I thought you people smok\u2019d it!]<br \/> Raymond Pettibon:<\/strong> I\u2019m not down with Obama, he\u2019s a very severe disappointment. He\u2019s worse than Bush, which is a pretty radical thing to be. America exports violence. Obama affects lives and people die. I could say \u2018Who cares\u2019, right? But I regret that kind of thing. I\u2019m for saving lives, not for killing, and killing is what Obama does. He\u2019s a weak, punk-ass motherfucker who doesn\u2019t have to do that, but he does. He does it to get reelected. In America, foreign policy is domestic policy. I wish my work wasn\u2019t about that. I\u2019d rather not have to deal with politics.<em><strong> <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>sleek<\/strong><strong> But you do. Do you think that this is the role of the artist in society?<\/strong>  <strong>RP<\/strong> Artists can kiss my ass. They do it for their own careers. I don\u2019t give a fuck about clowning and careering. Fuck \u2018em.<em><strong><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>sleek<\/strong> <strong>We are sitting in one of Berlin\u2019s largest galleries right now.<\/strong>  <strong>RP<\/strong> Berlin is an amazing city in a lot of ways, I mean the Wall coming down? But don\u2019t give Reagan any credit for that. And don\u2019t give JFK any credit for anything, either, the Berlin airlift and all that. \u2018We are all Berliners?\u2019 Fuck that motherfucker, the guy was a dick. My idols are Lee Harvey Oswald and Sirhan Bishara Sirhan. Music-wise, I love German opera.<em><strong><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>sleek<\/strong> <strong>Does music influence your work? Do you listen to music when you draw?<\/strong>  <strong>RP<\/strong> Music doesn\u2019t bother or distract me. I\u2019m not easily distracted because I\u2019ve lived in places where the traffic is incessant and loud, and coming from a large family\u2026 you get used to it. But no, I don\u2019t necessarily listen when I work.
