That is, until artists started challenging this assumption in the 1960s and 1970s, with Cindy Sherman leading the pack. Being one of the most influential photo artists of the late 20th century, Sherman has consistently analysed the fluidity of identity and has inspired generations of younger artists to drag up and perform for the camera.<br \/>\n&#8220;Cindy Sherman: Imitation of Life&#8221;, is a new exhibition in LA showing the entirety of Sherman&#8217;s career, including film projections\u00a0from her early\u00a0years up until\u00a0the present. Most known for her self-portraits which focus on societal stereotypes of the female persona, she often assumed the role of make-up artist, director and hair stylist for each image.\u00a0Controversy arose in 1976 when the young creative, fresh out of art school, shot\u00a0a series of\u00a0portraits entitled &#8220;Bus Riders&#8221; prominently featuring the white woman in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tate.org.uk\/art\/artworks\/sherman-untitled-p78535\" target=\"_blank\">blackface<\/a>. Some of these are also on display at the Broad and are set to reopen discussions of the subject.<br \/>\nThanks to modern day technology,\u00a0Cindy has been unable to escape the necessary and meaningful dialogue this work deserves. In 2015, Twitter user <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/E_SCRAAATCH\/status\/658341641300934656\" target=\"_blank\">@E_SCRAAATCH<\/a>\u00a0created the hashtag #cindygate, a social media movement which was then featured on <a href=\"http:\/\/thecreatorsproject.vice.com\/blog\/cindygate-and-the-lasting-stain-of-cindy-shermans-blackface-photos\" target=\"_blank\">The Creators Project<\/a>.\u00a0Curious patrons will have the opportunity to view these\u00a0problematic photographs at the survey, which includes over 120 artworks.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"size--small\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-32443\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sleek-mag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Screen-Shot-2016-06-08-at-16.30.18.png\" alt=\"Cindy Sherman: Imitation of Life at The Broad Museum\" width=\"1494\" height=\"747\" \/> Cindy Sherman, Untitled #92, 1981, chromogenic color print, 24 x 48 inches, The Eli and Edythe L.
