\nAs June came to an end, Balenciaga’s still-newbie Creative Director Demna Gvasalia presented his first menswear collection<\/a>\u00a0for the brand. In fact, it was not only the first menswear collection by Gvasalia, but also the first menswear catwalk show by Balenciaga, as the fashion house has traditionally opted for simple presentations of men\u2019s collections.
\nWhile Gvasalia\u2019s interpretation of womenswear \u2013 shown earlier this March \u2013 exhibited\u00a0a skilful yet reserved exercise in tailoring, the men\u2019s show was a bolder, more ambiguous statement that left many\u00a0fashion editors wondering: does Demna fit in at Balenciaga?

\nCrist\u00f3bal Balenciaga founded the Spanish\u00a0house\u00a0in 1919, only to\u00a0close it briefly\u00a0in 1968 during a movement of fashion democratisation known as the\u00a0youth-quake. The designer famously\u00a0said, \u201cI am not made to dress people in the street.\u201d On the contrary, Gvasalia is the disciple of normcore. His work is not only inspired by street style, it imitates the banal \u2013 uniforms, daily wear, the familiar wardrobe staples.
\nFrom the beginning,\u00a0Balenciaga\u00a0sought to create a label synonymous with luxury.\u00a0Vogue took notice,\u00a0lauding the designer for his use of rich and sumptuous fabrics as well as the sense of grandeur his clothes portrayed. And \u2013 weird as it might seem \u2013 that is exactly what he has in common with Gvasalia. Despite the young designer’s fascination with\u00a0\u201cthe ordinary\u201d, his clothes are far from so. The Gvasalia-brothers elevate street style with their refined cuts, using costly fabrics to create\u00a0limited edition pieces. The famous (or infamous) \u201cDHL\u201d T-shirt that Vetements showed during its\u00a0Paris show last winter is a perfect example. Made of\u00a0high-end\u00a0materials and sold as a limited edition item, trend analyst Aleksandra Szymanska of The Future Laboratory<\/a> believes it represents \u201ca different definition of luxury,\u201d going on to include, \u201cit\u2019s about an attention-grabbing visual statement.\u201d Demna\u2019s vision of luxury is ironic, bold and fresh \u2013 just what the current fashion system craves.

\nMasterful tailoring is another important element of Balenciaga\u2019s DNA. Gvasalia\u2019s recent menswear collection was inspired by Crist\u00f3bal\u2019s coat with a missing sleeve. The coat was created by Balenciaga for himself, but was never finished. As Gvasalia stumbled upon it while researching the maison\u2019s archives, he took it upon himself\u00a0to complete the late-designer’s work. The result was unexpected \u2013 a collection filled with broad shoulders, tight-fitting shorts and\u00a0heavy brogues. While it does invoke\u00a0visions\u00a0of\u00a0\u201cDavid Byrne meets Vetements\u201d, Gvasalia’s exploration of\u00a0close-fits and loose cuts follows the steps of Balenciaga himself, who was probably one of the first designers in the west to appreciate the spacious and the oversized.

\nCrist\u00f3bal Balenciaga was strikingly ahead of his time. His original designs maintain their\u00a0contemporaneity\u00a0even\u00a0when placed beside\u00a0today\u2019s avant-garde designs. An\u00a0exhibition\u00a0entitled \u201cGame Changers\u201d, currently on display at Antwerp’s MoMU<\/a>,\u00a0aims to showcase\u00a0the 20th century’s most innovative designs and includes pieces created by Crist\u00f3bal Balenciaga himself. The presentation reveals that Balenciaga’s approach has much more in common with Margiela than with his contemporary Dior. The sense of immediacy, contemporaneity and modernity is in the DNA of the fashion house. In reality, it might be the very reason why the brand’s owners at Gucci Group\u00a0have\u00a0had such difficulty in the search\u00a0to find a suitable\u00a0creative director.
\nWith Gvasalia at the helm of the fashion house, the search is finally over. The Georgia-born designer, with his truly breakthrough approach, is bringing back Balenciaga\u2019s legacy that lies in clear cuts, luxury and strong vision.
