Images from <a href=\"http:\/\/oglobo.globo.com\/cultura\/artes-visuais\/instalacao-de-giancarlo-neri-na-olimpiada-cancelada-19729251\" target=\"_blank\">O Globo<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nRio&#8217;s public art programme, which intended to begin in time for\u00a0the 2016\u00a0Olympics, has suffered further budget cuts, leading to the cancellation of a previously approved artwork by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.giancarloneri.com\" target=\"_blank\">Giancarlo Neri<\/a>. The artist\u2019s \u201cBar Paris\u201d installation, which comprises 1,415 chairs with lights attached to them, was to be unveiled at a public square in the Gl\u00f3ria neighbourhood of Rio de Janeiro. Having already exhibited at this precise location <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=C0vGIUzVHAs\" target=\"_blank\">back in 2012<\/a>, the news was not taken lightly by the artist nor\u00a0the public. In fact, Giancarlo Neri <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo.php?fbid=10209679002761616&amp;set=pb.1526110693.-2207520000.1470744635.&amp;type=3&amp;theater\" target=\"_blank\">posted<\/a>\u00a0a photo on his Facebook account\u00a0of Marcelo Calero, the Brazilian Minister of Culture, with a caption that ironically thanks him \u201cfor cancelling all the cultural projects of the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro; including our own, of course.\u201d<br \/>\nThe cuts to the public art programme came after the Brazilian government sought to close the Ministry of Culture in order to reduce spending. As a result, artists and citizens in Brazil started protesting the abrupt decision, subsequently forcing the interim president Michel Temer to reinstate the ministry even though funds would remain scarce. What is still a mystery, however, is the fact that although so many projects were cancelled, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jr-art.net\" target=\"_blank\">JR<\/a>\u2019s two public art installations for the Rio Olympics did go through. The anonymous artist\u2019s involvement is of course great news, but the reason behind it remains unknown, much like the ongoing battle between <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.de\/whatsapp-gets-blocked-and-unblocked-in-brazil-before-olympics-2016-7\" target=\"_blank\">WhatsApp and the Brazilian court system<\/a>.<br \/>\nThankfully, JR\u2019s two public art installations have made it through the political instabilities of the South American country and can still be found adorning the skyline on a high-rise residential building in The Marvelous City&#8217;s Flamengo neighbourhood and at Barra da Tijuca&#8217;s seaside.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"size--small\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-35363\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sleek-mag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/JR-Barra-da-Tijuca-Rio-de-Janeiro-900x540.jpg\" alt=\"JR Public Art Rio de Janeiro\" width=\"900\" height=\"540\" \/> Left: Image of the Scaffolding used for the installation.
