Copyright Marguerite Humeau and DUVE Berlin<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nMarguerite Humeau\u2019s work investigates the foundations of history, anthropology and science. In her 2012 installation, \u201cCleopatra \u2018That Goddess\u2019\u201d, the Egyptian queen is revived as a synthetic voice singing love songs in extinct languages. And in \u201cEchoes\u201d (2015) features white sculptures of snakes in a space supposedly covered in black mamba venom. Beguiling and startling, the 29-year-old French artist reminds us of the dark corners of human knowledge. Prior to her forthcoming collaborative show at the Manifesta Biennale 11 in Zurich, as well as her solo exhibition at Palais de Tokyo, Paris, Humeau caught up with SLEEK to talk about her new projects. The artist has also been announced as one of the most influentials French people in the world by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vanityfair.fr\/actualites\/pouvoir\/diaporama\/les-50-francais-les-plus-influents-du-monde-2016\/38807#40-marguerite-humeau-artiste-29-ans\" target=\"_blank\">Vanity Fair<\/a>.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n<b>SLEEK: What are you doing for Manifesta?<br \/>\n<\/b>Marguerite Humeau: Well, participants have been paired with \u201chost professionals\u201d, in my case, a designer called Matthias B\u00fcrki from Autonomous Systems Lab in Zurich. He creates the decision processes for self-driving cars, and has been helping me \u201cteach\u201d two mechanical creatures I\u2019ve designed how to communicate via Wi-fi.<br \/>\n<b>Maybe they need Facebook. What\u2019s your exhibition at Palais <\/b><b>de Tokyo about?<br \/>\n<\/b>Sentience. I\u2019ve been researching the origin of language, and have created a celestial chorus using synthetic approximations of the voices of every human that has existed on earth, in every single language that\u2019s ever existed. That\u2019s 108 billion Homo Sapiens voices, divided into 24 different choruses according to their gender and age of death.<br \/>\n<b>And what about the other works?<br \/>\n<\/b>There\u2019s a fresco about the primordial soup featuring a group of 10 sculptures mimicking an elephant death ritual. It\u2019s based on this story I read of a female elephant that died in the jungle.<br \/>\n<b>What was your inspiration?<br \/>\n<\/b>I asked a zoologist which species would have become sentient had humanity not evolved, and he suggested elephants because of these rituals. I\u2019m interested in the evolution of love, and want to explore whether or not these emotions are the result of hormones or other phenomena. The same thing goes for the Manifesta show and the choir of homo sapiens.
