You may remember Chiharu Shiota as the artist behind 2015&#8217;s highly Instagrammed work at the Venice Biennale<\/strong> \nThe artist was honoured to represent Japan at the 2015 Venice Biennale, but she is quick to point out that she does not like being confined or labelled as a\u00a0Japanese artist. &#8220;I&#8217;ve never worked as a Japanese artist, I&#8217;m simply\u00a0an artist. However, working for the Venice Biennale\u00a0stirs\u00a0up a\u00a0strong sense of nationalism that can also\u00a0create a lot of pressure. It&#8217;s tough.&#8221;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong>2. This is her\u00a0first hometown exhibition in eight years<\/strong> \nThough Shiota is based in Berlin, a busy schedule of worldwide exhibitions has left her\u00a0away from home\u00a0to work\u00a0everywhere from Sydney to\u00a0S\u00e3o Paulo. This particular tangled creation stretches over 20 metres high<\/strong> \nUpon being invited to show at Blain|Southern, Shiota gladly accepted the challenge of how to fully occupy\u00a0the gallery&#8217;s expansive space. &#8220;A painting would have been too small, so\u00a0I decided to create one\u00a0big installation. It wasn&#8217;t easy, but that&#8217;s what makes\u00a0it so rewarding.&#8221;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong>5. She\u00a0spent 12 days weaving &#8220;Uncertain Journey&#8221;<\/strong> \nShiota&#8217;s yarn-based works regularly feature metres and metres of geometrically intertwined thread. For this particular installation, the artist reveals that it took 10 people and 12 days to create the impressive detailed-oriented patterns.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong>6. When asked about her work&#8217;s popularity on Instagram, she believes it&#8217;s a direct result of the installation&#8217;s universal message<\/strong> \n&#8220;I want people to enter the space and get a sense of my work immediately,&#8221; affirms Shiota. For her, it is this immediate connection that causes onlookers to take so many photos. &#8220;When guests are confronted with this\u00a0sense of immediacy, it can leave a lasting impression.&#8221;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong>8. The artist was\u00a0taught by one of contemporary art&#8217;s most famous\u00a0performance artists<\/strong> \nWhen Shiota moved to Germany from Japan\u00a0in order to further her art studies, the artist enrolled at a Berlin university as a pupil\u00a0under\u00a0Marina Abramovic.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong>9.
