Edgar Heinrich,\u00a0Head of BMW\u2019s motorbike design\u00a0team, gave SLEEK the details.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Why did you redesign the BMW R5?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">For us, the R5 is one of the most\u00a0historically important BMW motorbikes,\u00a0as it was extremely advanced\u00a0for its time, both technologically\u00a0and in terms of design. The bike\u2019s\u00a0entire technical profile still stands\u00a0up today. And it has a very distinct\u00a0aesthetic, pared-down but with harmonious\u00a0proportions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>What\u2019s special about the\u00a0R5 Hommage? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The most interesting technical aspect\u00a0about it is that it\u2019s extremely\u00a0streamlined. Today it\u2019s very easy to\u00a0build something highly complex,\u00a0but difficult to create something\u00a0simple. I like it when you\u2019re able to\u00a0see the mechanics of a technical object.\u00a0The Hommage is a great example\u00a0of liberated design, freed from\u00a0all the components that aren\u2019t actually\u00a0necessary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"size--small\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-37899 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sleek-mag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/BMW_3-780x600.jpg\" alt=\"BMW R5 Hommage Motorcycle\" width=\"780\" height=\"600\" \/> BMW R5 Hommage Motorcycle<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>How have you recast it for\u00a0today\u2019s world?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The Hommage is a combination of\u00a0traditional elements and modern\u00a0components. We took five of the\u00a0R5\u2019s iconic features and reinterpreted\u00a0them: the boxer motor, the unmistakable\u00a0frame, the characteristic\u00a0rear-axle transmission, the black\u00a0and pinstripe colour scheme, and\u00a0the tank-seat composition. If think\u00a0about a design as a recipe, these\u00a0were the basic ingredients.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>What do customers look for in a\u00a0contemporary motorbike?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0Today we are increasingly seeing customers\u00a0who consciously go against\u00a0the whole \u2018max power\u2019 mindset. They\u00a0don\u2019t want a bike with 150 horsepower,\u00a0but prefer to have a straightforward,\u00a0emotional experience. Rather\u00a0than extreme speeds they crave an\u00a0extreme sense of freedom. There\u2019s a\u00a0resurgence of people who want this.<\/p>\n<p class=\"size--small\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-37897 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sleek-mag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/BMW_1-900x600.jpg\" alt=\"BMW R5 Hommage Motorcycle\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" \/> BMW R5 Hommage Motorcycle<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>BMW has a long and distinguished\u00a0history. What does it mean to you?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">It\u2019s important, but until recently we\u00a0didn\u2019t really make the most of it. It\u2019s\u00a0a huge treasure trove to delve into.\u00a0We\u2019ve been systematically drawing\u00a0from this for a few years now, but\u00a0with an appropriate degree of dignity\u00a0and detachment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>The R5 is a work of art in its own\u00a0right.
