\nEvery year the\u00a0London Design Festival<\/a>\u00a0only furthers\u00a0the UK capital’s position as a major contender in the world of design. The\u00a0event came to a close last week, and during its run\u00a0there were a few trends we noticed time and time again. Read below for a round-up of the design motifs making buzz in 2016.<\/em>
\n <\/p>\n

Relaxing public spaces<\/h3>\n

Utilising nature to evoke a sense of calm into London\u2019s busy community, Asif Khan<\/a>\u00a0created an installation where commuters, office workers and stressed out students could stop\u00a0and\u00a0unwind. Built\u00a0as a collaboration with MINI, the\u00a0forest-themed work was located in the bustling district of Shoreditch and featured three box-like rooms.\u00a0Khan, who was inspired by the\u00a0Japanese idea of shinrin-yoku<\/em> (forest bathing), encouraged visitors to use the space as a base for socialising and working in order to increase harmony in the city.
\nAnother installation that injected positivity into the capital is Mathieu Lehanneur<\/a>\u2019s work “Liquid Marble”. The French designer replicated\u00a0the motion of the ocean using black marble and 3D printing, with the intent to “bring water to a place where there is none” and “to create a contemplative experience.”

Wholesome Minimalist<\/h3>\n

Labelled the\u00a0“finest design-led European furniture and lighting company”, Viaduct<\/a>\u00a0hosted\u00a0an exhibition to showcase\u00a0the best in contemporary lighting and furniture. Located at the Clerkenwell Design Quarter, the display offered a collection of minimal designs such as the\u00a0revolutionary “Tube Chair” by Joe Colombo\u00a0as well as\u00a0Jasper Morrison\u2019s newly launched “Superloon Floor Lamp”.
\nElsewhere in the fair, Nina Tolstrup and Jack Mama<\/a> presented a 13-square-metres house, proving that limited space does not have to mean limited design. Minimal furniture was\u00a0integrated\u00a0to create a space that appeared larger than its actual size.
\nA\u00a0LDF regular, furniture mogul Jasper Morrison<\/a>\u00a0collaborated with Barber and Osgerby<\/a>\u00a0for a\u00a0joint project featuring\u00a0contemporary homewares. Shown\u00a0at Sir John Soane’s Museum<\/a>, this awe-inspiring space was\u00a0opened to the public for its first time ever.

Pocket-friendly pieces<\/h3>\n

A\u00a0perfect example of everyday\u00a0design\u00a0can be seen in an artists’ ability to\u00a0mould and shape basic utensils. Geffrye Museum<\/a>\u2019s “Ceramics in the City” displayed the work of 50 potters\u00a0with\u00a0a range of artisanal bowls, pots and mugs. Much more than average crockery, these works of art\u00a0served as\u00a0an affordable way of taking home excellent design objects.
\nLucy Foakes<\/a>\u2019 range “Pop Craft” took influence from ancient Egyptian ceramics and mixed in\u00a0icons\u00a0from popular culture. Her Kurt Cobain urn, which exemplifies this concept, provided an\u00a0unusual addition to any\u00a0Nirvana fan’s collection of memorabilia.
\nFor design objects with a bit more practicality, Ben Davies’ marbled ceramic bowls and Katharina Klug’s hand-painted porcelain vases were highlights not regretted.
