Every region of the world has its\u00a0own unique variation on the plait, with\u00a0techniques handed down generation\u00a0after generation. Consequently, the\u00a0practice has become more than a trend,\u00a0with different cultures attributing different\u00a0meanings to braids \u2013 something\u00a0Sara Mathiasson, a Swedish-born artist,\u00a0knows all too well.<\/p>\n<p>Currently based in Berlin, she graduated\u00a0from Gambia\u2019s Gaye Njorro School\u00a0of Hairdressing and Beauty Cosmetology\u00a0in 2013, where her research focussed\u00a0on the history of the hairstyle. Subsequently,\u00a0she began experimenting with\u00a0it as a form of artistic practice, and\u00a0today, her gravity-defying sculptures\u00a0transform hair into an aesthetic medium.\u00a0Modest and unassuming, she shyly\u00a0declines to answer a question about\u00a0whether she considers herself to be an\u00a0artist, preferring instead to concentrate\u00a0on her art. \u201cIt\u2019s always exciting to see\u00a0how different the end result is from\u00a0when I began,\u201d she says, discussing her\u00a0work process. \u201cI never have a set idea\u00a0in my mind. Right: dress by Nhorm<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nFor this issue\u2019s Icon story, SLEEK escaped\u00a0to the rural outskirts of the German\u00a0capital to photograph Mathiasson\u2019s\u00a0follicular creations in the delicate light\u00a0of Brandenburg\u2019s plains. Eschewing professional\u00a0models, Mathiasson invited\u00a0the DJ behind Berlin club night <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sleek-mag.com\/de\/2016\/03\/26\/the-club-night-proving-african-acid-is-the-future\/\" target=\"_blank\">African\u00a0Acid is the Future<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sleek-mag.com\/de\/tag\/maryama-luccioni\/\" target=\"_blank\">Maryama Luccioni<\/a>,\u00a0to pose with her crew.
