The art world loves a good trend, but who doesn\u2019t? And no place is better for spotting the latest artistic craze\u00a0than Frieze London<\/a>. This year the fair boasts more than 160 galleries, many of which are based in Berlin. SLEEK\u2019s online editor Will Furtado went around the booths to see what\u2019s making the art market tick in 2016.

Totemic towers<\/h3>\n

From poles of stacked up rubber genitals to plain geometrical shapes rising up to the sky, the totem-like structure is erect and well at Frieze. Gallery Shanghart offered\u00a0the rudest creation\u00a0with Ouyang Chun\u2019s tower of readymades. Meanwhile, artist Angela Bullock’s navy geometrical totem at Boesky\u00a0provided style and Marwan Rechmaoui displayed\u00a0the most somber example with its tower made of concrete and metal at Sfeir-Semler.

Ceramics<\/h3>\n

If there\u2019s one thing that ceramics says, it\u2019s: I\u2019m conceptual und<\/i> crafty. This year it appears that\u00a0anything to successfully survive\u00a0a fiery furnace made it into Frieze London. Glazed art objects sat shining in at least five booths. These glossy creations included Jeff Koon<\/a>\u2019s ballerinas at Rech, Klara Kristalova\u2019s kneeling statue and Bharti Kher\u2019s split woman at Perrotin.

Mirrors<\/h3>\n

Reflective artworks are always a winner (hi\u00a0again, Koons) which confirms our suspicions that\u00a0every collector’s\u00a0pro-filter attitude\u00a0predates\u00a0Snapchat. But the new trend circumvents that reticence altogether in the form of actual mirrors being part of the artwork. The best examples include Darren Almond<\/a>\u2019s numerical mirror at Hetzler, Kader Attia<\/a>‘s small broken mirrors splattered on a canvas at Lehmann Maupin and Ryan Gander<\/a>\u2019s half-covered full-length mirror at Schipper\/Johnen.

Minerals<\/h3>\n

Witchcraft’s resurgence is still too indie to be at a top art fair. So the closest thing we saw at Frieze London is \u2013 minerals. If these (semi?) precious stones didn\u2019t cast a spell on any buyers, at least they made it to SLEEK\u2019s top trends list. The most spellbinding are Daniel Arsham\u2019s bubblicious \u201cPink Selenite Boombox\u201d at Perrotin, and Navid Nuur\u2019s rock at Hetzler.

Scraps assemblage<\/h3>\n

In such a prestigious art fair, you would think\u00a0that run of the mill materials would be a big no-no. Well, it looks like we were all wrong. Collectors at this year’s event are being teased with average items left and right, presumably for their novelty aspect. The most eye-catching and perplexing were Paola Pivi<\/a>\u2019s revolving \u201cReversing time\u201d wheel at Perrotin, Vlassis Caniaris’ \u201cChild\u201d at Peter Kilchamnn, Michael Gumhold\u2019s suitcases and drumsticks at Georg Kargl and Opavivara!\u2019s street-vendor-on-K-installations at A Gentil Carioca.
