\nThough the artist admits to painting for everyone \u2013 regardless of race and gender \u2013 I like to think that Monica Kim Garza<\/a>‘s artworks are created specifically with women of colour like myself in mind.\u00a0Each image features brown bodies in relaxed positions, and you can be certain that they are almost always depicted\u00a0full-figured, nude and unapologetically so. Her portfolio of work provides the kind of representation that non-white women are craving in 2016, especially in a cultural landscape that continues to take without much or any recognition. Even so, Garza acknowledges\u00a0that these timely issues don’t play a huge factor in her artistic approach, revealing that because of\u00a0her multi-cultural background, the\u00a0resulting imagery is simply a result of what she knows best.<\/p>\n

With fashion’s constant appropriation of non-white culture,\u00a0each painting is laden with the timely message that brown women\u00a0are beautiful, powerful and worthy of display<\/h2>\n

Born in the suburbs of central Georgia, Garza didn’t have much access to art throughout her youth. “We didn\u2019t have classes for it or anything,” she says, “so I was left to\u00a0teach myself how to draw and paint when I was an adolescent.” This tenacity followed the artist\u00a0into adulthood, leading her\u00a0to migrate westward. There,\u00a0she completed a BFA in painting and drawing from California College of the Arts. Always staying true to her roots, the creative has since returned south, where she is now based in\u00a0Atlanta.\u00a0“My soul feels good here,” confesses Garza. “Being close to my family and being close to nature \u2013 I feel very relaxed.”
\nDespite her affirmations towards the contrary, it’s difficult\u00a0not to look at Garza’s art as a socio-political\u00a0opposition towards traditional western views on women of colour. In today’s world of anti-immigration rhetoric spewed by Donald Trump<\/a>\u00a0and fashion’s constant appropriation of non-white culture,\u00a0each painting is laden with the timely message that brown women\u00a0are beautiful, powerful and worthy of display.\u00a0Recent works from the artist’s catalog take things one step further,\u00a0with Garza transforming\u00a0the over-sexualisation of women\u00a0of colour\u00a0into a force of reclaimed power. This\u00a0thematic\u00a0progression from scenes of tranquility\u00a0towards\u00a0ones\u00a0of\u00a0intimacy is something Garza and\u00a0her friends have since jokingly\u00a0labelled “from sloth to turn up.”

With almost 20,000 followers on her personal Instagram<\/a>\u00a0as well as a regram last month from the popular account @love.watts<\/a>, Garza’s work is gaining a loyal fan base\u00a0that stretches beyond\u00a0the American south. Last year she\u00a0collaborated on a series of limited edition skateboard decks with New York-based 5BORONYC. “I’ve always been drawn to skate culture, and Mark Nardelli had this specific vision of my ladies in NYC,” Garza says. “I’m down with that company for life.”
\nFor those of who may not be\u00a0so gifted on\u00a0the half pipe, the artist’s website offers her beautiful illustrations on pastel-hued sweaters in addition to a selection of art prints. Finishing this year\u00a0with a few group shows here and there, Garza looks forward to a potential solo exhibition in 2017. “My only goal is to stay focused and just\u00a0keep hustling hard towards my dreams.”
