Image from bbc.co.uk<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nA\u00a0new\u00a0area\u00a0was introduced at this year&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sleek-mag.com\/de\/2016\/10\/06\/frieze-london-2016\/\" target=\"_blank\">Frieze Art Fair<\/a> in London, as Geneva-based curator Nicolas Trembley placed special attention on\u00a0an era of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sleek-mag.com\/de\/2016\/08\/03\/nineties-girl-fashion\/\" target=\"_blank\">TLC<\/a>, europop and raving with The Nineties section. Tapping into society&#8217;s current obsession with all things <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Year_2000_problem\" target=\"_blank\">pre-Y2K<\/a>, galleries\u00a0were given the task of highlighting key creatives from the seminal period in contemporary art. Some of these artists have since retired or passed, while others continue to produce a steady stream of works.<br \/>\nFollowing the wave of Nineties nostalgia, here we highlight 10 other important artists to gain prominence during the decade, in addition to our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sleek-mag.com\/de\/2016\/10\/05\/young-british-artists\/\">YBA special.<\/a><br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"size--small\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-39548 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sleek-mag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/working-is-bad-job_1.jpg\" alt=\"Maurizio Cattelan. Image from artsalesindex.artinfo.com<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sleek-mag.com\/de\/?s=Maurizio+Cattelan&amp;submit=Search\" target=\"_blank\">Maurizio Cattelan<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>Notorious for his seamless blend of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sleek-mag.com\/de\/2016\/10\/04\/artists-humour\/\" target=\"_blank\">art and humour<\/a>, Italian-born Maurizio Cattelan is contemporary art&#8217;s most\u00a0satirical sculptor. For the 1993 Venice Biennale, the artist\u00a0sold his space to perfume brand\u00a0Schiaparelli due to the immense anxiety he felt during the creative process. Entitled &#8220;Working Is a Bad Job&#8221;, the work raised questions of commerce and art, with critics labelling the gesture an act of cynicism.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"size--small\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-39544\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sleek-mag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Tillmans_2.jpg\" alt=\"Wolfgang Tillmans, Daniel Buchholz exhibition, 1992. Image from anothermag.com<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sleek-mag.com\/de\/?s=Wolfgang+Tillmans&amp;submit=Search\" target=\"_blank\">Wolfgang Tillmans<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>When Wolfgang Tillmans exhibited his very first show in 1993 at K\u00f6ln&#8217;s Galerie Buchholz,\u00a0this marked the beginning of a very long professional relationship between the photographer and the multi-locale\u00a0art space. In a room of 9 sqm, the artist presented a series of zoomed-in portraits in black and white as well as a selection of\u00a0colour photographs. The German photographer documented the decade like no one else. He shot London\u2019s and Berlin\u2019s underground techno and rave scenes in the early \u201990s as well as the personalities of the era including Tony Blair and Chlo\u00eb Sevigny. To this day, Tillmans is still represented by Buchholz, with the artist&#8217;s most recent show\u00a0&#8220;Studio&#8221; presented during the 2016 Berlin Gallery Weekend.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"size--small\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-39554\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sleek-mag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Carsten_Hollers_Double_Slide-wikimedia.org_.jpg\" alt=\"Carsten H\u00f6ller's &quot;Double Slide&quot; Image from wikimedia.org\" width=\"3091\" height=\"2048\" \/> Carsten H\u00f6ller&#8217;s &#8220;Double Slide&#8221; Image from wikimedia.org<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sleek-mag.com\/de\/?s=Carsten+H%C3%B6ller&amp;submit=Search\" target=\"_blank\">Carsten H\u00f6ller<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>Carsten H\u00f6ller&#8217;s immersive\u00a0works\u00a0utilise fantastical elements such as carousels, slides and light installations\u00a0in an effort to play with patrons&#8217; senses of perception. In 1993, the artist joined Cattelan in the Venice exhibition &#8220;Aperto 93&#8221;, a show which positioned H\u00f6ller for a successful career that has allowed the artist to show everywhere from London&#8217;s Tate Modern to Berlin&#8217;s Hamburger Bahnhof.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"size--small\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-39547\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sleek-mag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Untitled-1992-Free.jpg\" alt=\"Rirkrit Tiravanija, Untitled 1992 (Free). Image from kurimanzutto.com<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sleek-mag.com\/de\/?s=Rirkrit+Tiravanija&amp;submit=Search\" target=\"_blank\">Rirkrit Tiravanija<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>Incorporating his Thai background into the piece presented at Venice&#8217;s Aperto 93, Rirkrit Tiravanija exhibited an artwork\u00a0that references Thailand&#8217;s culinary practice of meal sharing.\u00a0&#8220;Untitled\u00a01993 (Cure)&#8221; saw the artist cooking traditional Thai soups inside a tea tent. Image from americansuburbx.com<\/p>\n<h3>Richard Billingham<\/h3>\n<p>In the 1990s, Richard Billingham photographed his parents in a series that eventually became &#8220;Ray&#8217;s a Laugh&#8221;. The intimate project revealed\u00a0the alcoholism of his father as well as his mother&#8217;s tendency to hoard pets and cheap\u00a0tchotchkes. Billingham chose to shoot the series on the cheapest film available as a\u00a0reflection of\u00a0the family&#8217;s deep level of poverty.
