{"id":39678,"date":"2016-10-20T16:17:10","date_gmt":"2016-10-20T14:17:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sleek-mag.com\/?p=39678"},"modified":"2016-10-20T16:17:10","modified_gmt":"2016-10-20T14:17:10","slug":"maria-gruzdeva-photography","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sleek-mag.com\/de\/article\/maria-gruzdeva-photography\/","title":{"rendered":"The Photographer Searching for Belonging in Russia&#039;s Most Isolated Areas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-40081 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sleek-mag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Russia_10.jpg\" alt=\"russia_10\" width=\"1267\" height=\"1000\" \/><br \/>\nPresenting large-scale images\u00a0of\u00a0Russia&#8217;s expansive and desolate borders, photographer Maria Gruzdeva dissects notions of national identity in a post-Soviet landscape.\u00a0Now based in London, the distance from her homeland has allowed the photographer to further examine this subject from a broader scope through the series\u00a0&#8220;\u201cBORDER &#8211; A journey along the edges of Russia\u201d.\u00a0With 60,000km of territory\u00a0to work with, each of Gruzdeva&#8217;s photos reveal a distinct\u00a0side to Russia&#8217;s\u00a0outskirts. Included in the project are pages from the photographer&#8217;s personal journal, each adding to the rich narrative that seeks personal identity within the most isolated and solitary areas.<br \/>\nAs the Russian aesthetic continues to dominate art and fashion communities alike, this series of mostly tranquil\u00a0imagery (save for the balaclava-wearing, gun-toting soldier) provides a sharp contrast to the usual image the rest of the world\u00a0is often fed. Absent is the crowd of edgy, Gosha-sporting youth, full of attitude and effortless cool. Instead, we are given an idyllic view that aims to highlight the country&#8217;s immense\u00a0area as well as its geographic diversity. The environments switch from snow-filled and rural to blue-skied and mountainous.\u00a0As a whole, the series reads like a road trip that travels along Russia&#8217;s twisting\u00a0borders and makes pit stops along the way.
