Der schwarze Vorhang an einem Fenster des K\u00fcnstlerhauses Bethanien l\u00e4dt das Publikum dazu ein, die Galerie zu betreten \u2013 \u00e4hnlich wie beim \u00dcberschreiten einer Schwelle in ein Theater. Und im Falle dieser konkreten Ausstellung ist ein Bezug zum Theater eine passende Assoziation, oder vielleicht, um es genauer zu sagen, zum \u201cTheater der Gesten\u201d.<\/p>\n

Assaf Grubers Einzelausstellung \u201cThat Would be Telling\u201d zielt darauf ab, die Grenzen der Bildhauerei zu \u00fcberwinden und gleichzeitig zu ihren Urspr\u00fcngen zur\u00fcckzukehren \u2013 der Geste. Ausgangspunkt f\u00fcr diese Ausstellung war eine Serie aus dem Jahr 2004 mit dem Titel \u201cStudies in Sculpture\u201d, deren Werke auf Filmmaterial aus bekannten Kinoproduktionen der 1970er und 1980er Jahre basierten.<\/p>\n

In Grubers Werk schneidet und bearbeitet er Szenen aus Filmen und f\u00fcgt dabei die Wiederholung einer Handlung hinzu, die immer wieder vor sich geht. Dadurch regt er das Publikum dazu an, den Film eher als Skulptur denn in seiner urspr\u00fcnglichen Form als Film zu betrachten.<\/p>\n

Gruber nutzt Film nicht nur als Medium, sondern auch als Material; er formt und bearbeitet ihn wie ein Bildhauer, bis die Werke in sich geschlossen sind. Er verwandelt ihre Virtualit\u00e4t in eine physische Struktur und schafft Objekte aus etwas, das von Natur aus eine flache Oberfl\u00e4che ist, wodurch er einen Dialog zwischen dem Publikum und den umgebenden Objekten herstellt. Er versetzt sie in ungewohnte Situationen und schafft einen Sockel aus Erinnerungen, auf dem kollektive Geschichte und pers\u00f6nliche Erinnerungen aufeinanderprallen.\u00a0<\/p>\n
